the piston did look as bad as you would think it would have. the top circle on the rod snapped in half. and the piston stayed in the cylinder.

yep and it was much much cooler when it happend to my friends engine! When it happened to me... IT SUCKED! Luckily mine just ruined the cases, bed plate, rod/crank, and cylinder. My friends also punched a hole in the hull, broke the starter, and one reed cage!
And someone just told me the other day that Yamaha's are more reliable then Kawasakis because when the rod breaks, it doesn't take out everything... YEAH RIGHT!
