Can i build a custom SJ for under 5k?

Aren't the 94-95 midshafts the same as the RN anyway?

I could be wrong but I think not. Because 94s and 95s had no hull or motor case changes then why would the coupler change? A 650 case was the same as a 701 case. And a square hull is a square hull so the midshaft should be diff from all roundies?

Aren't the 94-95 midshafts the same as the RN anyway? So I think a 94-95 SN would be a complete swap. The big advantages of a RN are looks, 62t case instead of a 61x, and fiberglass topdeck to save a few pounds.

The other thing to consider is getting a cheap SN and doing the top deck conversion. The bottom hulls are the same anyway and a top deck conversion can be done for just a few more dollars over the cost of a RN...it'll cost you time though.

You're fairly local. If you want to ride my SN with a fairly built 701, you're welcome to. I ride down at Tobesofkee.

Are there any places that sell just bottom decks?
WCFs bottom decks are 900 without the conversion kit, if i could find 08 sj based bottom would it fit? Or do any places even sell just bottoms?
1k for wcfs top
1k for a bottom
and 1k for the stock parts would seem like a nice deal.

I don't know much about the 08+ SJ's. If you got the top and bottom decks for $2k and had to assemble them that would be cool. Finding all the stock parts for $1k is going to be tough though... Maybe $2k if you're buying parts individually. I spent $2k on my ski over the winter just building it up and I had just about everything already including a b pipe.

Expect a decent 61x engine with carbs and flywheel only to run $500 or so. You've still got to get a pump/prop, rideplate, intake grate, pole, hood, pipe (don't even bother with the stock pipe), fuel tank, all the cables, waterbox, midshaft, steering, switches, etc... It'd be easier and cheaper to find a donor ski and sell what you don't need.

Ive seen a few squares for sale locally. Picking up a cheap one would not only solve my need for stock parts, but also a title.
Also i just noticed the topdeck doesnt include a hood, but i could probably find a stock one pretty cheap seeing as how many people get lowered ones.
Just need to find out if i can get a bottom that will fit.

You are wrong. :clown:

90-93 - Old midshaft style
94-present - new midshaft style

The shaft length is the same for all years. The bolt pattern on the housing is different.
(Also, the shaft diameter on the threaded end is different)

This is the midshaft... They usually go for around $100 used if you need one.

OHH YA HELP ME FIND ONE THEN!!!!

I would definately save up and get a round. I did the whole square thing and out grew it in a month. What ever you get make sure its some thing you WANT. I would higly recomend getting a modded boat.

Just curious, why is the topdeck conversion so popular?
The conversion package is 1095 and the hood is another 900 from WCF
Wouldnt it be cheaper to just get a RN? or a rn hull atleast...

running a few miles every day is a lot cheaper then a lightweight hull and can be less time consuming then conversions! haha idk bout anyone else but i have a few pounds to lose:dance:

shadow im in your boat, i think the way to go is find a cheap modded square with a 701, ride it while savin up some cash, get a round hull and shave the hood:biggrin:

Well I haven't looked at midshafts lately but a month or two ago they were all over the place... some even as low as $80.

How can you outgrow a SN and not a RN?

I would agree though. A modded ski is going to be worth more to you if you want more power. A ski with $2k-$3k worth of mods is probably only worth about $1k more than a completely stock ski.

I think Virgin has 2 SJ hulls 4 sale. 07 & 08 RN. I think that RN for 3500 is a deal. Also I think Augustaf has a New WDK hull for Sale.

Get an ugly square and for the money you would waste on a top deck conversion (about 2K) build your self a strong motor.
What would you rather have,
a pretty hull with no balls
or
a square (some say the look fine) with power ?

I chose power over looks every time.
