borrowing other peoples ski's---ETIQUETTE

so, the upcoming freeride got me thinking about this. It is a situation that likely everyone of us has had to deal with:

"hey man, can I ride your ski?"

A year or 2 ago at the daytona freeride I watched one of the original SFSS's lend out a very nice ski to an out of state rider. The ski was properly sunk, dragged up on the beach upside down and returned to the owner with a 'sorry man'

that was it, he walked away. no helping to get it restarted, no apologies about the ruined paint job or gouged Xmetal pole.. and unfortunately..that ski failed to start the rest of the weekend..

everytime I think of that situation it pisses me off.

so, as far as test riding...whats acceptable, and what is not?

I can only think of one thing. Respect.

If you flood it, you fix it. If you break it you fix it.

Few years ago I sunk Ratti's ski in a compitition. I spent the next 20 minutes helping to get it running for the next round. Later own He sunk it himself. At the end of the day it was still sitting on the beach, so I helped them get it back up to the parking lot, and then the next hour or so trying to pump it clean and get it running for the next day. It is just what you do.

I would have been pissed off had someone pulled that crap with me.

I'm not big on riding other peoples ski's for just that reason. I feel bad enough when I damage my own.
But it's good to discuss because alot of folks can't bring their ski's to Daytona.

so what woudl you do if someone said "hey let me try your ski".....You agree:

they they go out, pull a huge nose stab...lawn dart the bottom, destroy the nose, break all four motor mounts, couplers..you know, the usual..yet, major carnage

what do you do?

(this is a 100% theoretical question)

i think that was the first or second freeride scott.... dick move.... you break it you fix it that simple...... same thing goes with racing you break it you fix it if you are riding someone else's boat

similar situation i borrowed someones boat for a race and cracked it in half through the bondline..... simple solution bought another hull.

IF you decide to let somebody ride your ski-explain the rules to them BEFORE they get on it. You might feel like a jerk while telling another grown adult that there are rules, BUT, if you don't, then you are likely to be the only one suffering.

Most of us are decent people, but there are some that don't know how to spell responsibilty. I have a very good friend that has a full carbon XFT with alot of power under her skirt. He often tells me to wear it out and try some big air tricks-out of respect for him and his property, I will not try big air tricks on his ski because I do not know how to do them and I am not going to learn on his ski. (or anyone else's for that matter).

The sad truth is that common sense in America is not common anymore. Not everyone thinks the way I do and therefore you should simply explain to Joe Blow that you have alot of money and time invested in your ski and therefore there are rules!:beerchug:

even if you dont break the ski you borrowed...... buying the owner a drink at the after party is always a must. should be rule #1
rule #2- you break it, you buy it!

The only problem with rule #2, Lets say I ride your ski and you have 15k tied up in it. Do you think I will have 15k in my pocket at a freeride? or access to 15k when I get home? That is why I don't try big air tricks on other peoples skis, I don't have the resources to cough up 15k in 15 minutes and I don't think many people on here do. IMO-if you have to ask somebody to ride their ski-then you probaly don't need to be on it.

However-if someone offers to let you ride their ski-have a lil RESPECT! If you F it up-FIX IT!

I have another very good friend that rides my ski a good bit. He is always very polite and asks every time he wants to get on it. The crazy part is he is only 16 and more polite than most adults I know. He has broke 2 trim cables on my ski and I can't get mad at him cause he feels so terrible after breaking them. (but I must say, the next one he breaks-his azz is installing the new one)lol

there is also a difference between a borrowed ride, and a reckless ride

One should always ride within their own limit, but when you are on borrowed equipment its a different story..

think about this....not only did you F up somones ski....You likely ruined their entire weekend, week, trip..whatever

i didnt mean you have to buy the whole ski..... just the part you broke... however if the engine blows are the hull splits, and there could have been some previous pre-existing damage, then i dont think the borrower should be held responsible.

but those are the best ones to bum rides off of! :bump:

LOL-you are a kid and your parents have not taught you responsibility-what are you gonna want to ride? A 7k limited or a 15k mod or a 25k full on the best of everything incl unobtanium? The answer is obvious. My rule is simple, if I don't know you and your moral standards, please don't ask. I have a hard time being an azz in public, but when it comes to my ski-I think I could say no.
