what would you all suggest for bulletproof mods for someone who likes to ride a lot and wrench a little.
I don't like pipes. at least the factory pipes (aftermarket) i have messed with have been a headache.

Best two mods to my SXR were pipe and ignition. Period! Learn how to tune and install the pipe, or have someone else do it. I ran mine for years with no issues. The problem with stuff like aftermarket parts is the installer

I had a FP on a 750sx and it was just a headache. it never stayed set. Also had an Octane that was a constant nightmare

What do you mean by never stayed set? In tune or pipe to motor? If you mean pipe to the motor I can agree with you! The way they mount I have had a lot of issues keeping them bolted up. I have never seen a issue with the factory sxr wet pipe. If your dead set against a pipe look into the group k 850 kit. The one I saw would have destroyed a well setup limited and runs a stock exhaust, it was very impressive!

i have to idle a long ways and with pipes I always had bogging and fouled plugs. in the end the pipes were never worth it and the waves are so big it doesn't matter.

Sounds like the pipes were never installed right. That includes jetting the carbs appropriately.
I can idle a long ways without fouling plugs my piped motor.
But, if you're dead set against pipes, plenty of good "non-pipe" advice has been given in this thread.

I agree, I think the Groupk kit is for me.

That's because the motor makes more power with a pipe. More power - more fuel.

they said the fuel consumption stayed the same with their big bore kit. I hope Im not posting too much, but it seems like the SXR section could use some traffic.
