Barrel roll set up (surf)

On the 550 (which works 10X better on a SJ stock for all I care) You need to hit the wave FAST like 35-45, I have a death grip on the finger throttle which keeps me committed. When you hit the wave fast you run into the wave when it forms its lip and a pretty semi scary face begins to form. It is the scariest to hit but it is the MONEY spot for a 550 or hell any ski. When I am about to hit the base of the wave before my launch, I do a SMALL prehop to off set my weight in the direction I am rolling to then crank the bars all the way up the wave to then Immediately after take off from the lip I throw my head towards my bondline and do my best to keep the pole down. Stay tucked in and hold on the the bitter and or sweet end. Speed gets you the height and the max speed on your rotation that the pump can deliver. Watch my video to see my small prehop into the wave. In a way its not necessary but its a great way for me to set and commit my body into the roll.

From years of doing tricks in various sports I'll give 2 bits of advice.
1. Have someone videotape your attempts. You'll see exactly what you are doing wrong and when.
2. Try to do everything (e.g. staying tucked, cranking the bars, etc) at 120% of what you think you need to do. You can always back off it on the next attempt if you take it too far, but you won't take it too far, trying for 120% when you are learning usually gets you 90% of the way there.

Good luck.

This is the best advice yet- watch video of yourself so you can see what your doing wrong and REALLY over emphasize your motions on whatever trick your trying to learn. I want to add two things- 1. When I was learning to roll and I was coming up short I found that hitting the wave way later helped a lot. I’m talking nose stab late. This gives you more height to compensate (Because like every one has said, you’re probably not tucking enough) and 2nd (This is yamasluts advice) is to OWN IT- I mean fully commit. The second you hold back, no matter how slight is when you’re going to come up short.

im in the same learning spot as you right now. i love huge stabs but its hard to change that style of jump into what makes a barrel roll work. best thing that works for me is to think more about just flowing off the wave and not jumping off it. if you get a chance to watch others you will see they commit and are a 1/4 turn rotated before they leave the water, unlike stabs. try making your limiter rope short enuff to keep your pole really low so you cant puss out...good luck

im with mark on this one.i dont do any pre turn, but it is essential like someone else said to hit the wave real late.it is 10 x easyer if the wave is lipped up to almost vert.when you get better at them you can do them off small lumpy waves but in the begining you got to pick good waves

Been hitting them too early..............

Trying to learn on smaller stuff so I dont kill myself, and seem to hit them before they peak and get too big. Surf has been HUGE the couple rides.

Did get a :barrel: today though!

And lots of 3/4 to 7/8 that left my leg purple:haha:

Went BIG on a couple and still didnt make it all the way on those..............not getting the spiral off the wave like I should.

Time will tell................but these beatings are getting old!

I could never get past 3/4 for ages. I found I had to make a real conscious effort to really twist my upper body on initial take off to start the rotation

Grahammy realized exactly what will help you finish your rolls. Great job for going big but it takes more technique to hit a big roll off the lip than cranking the bars and turning your head. You can do it no sweat just make sure you really commit your body into a tight tucked and strong roll. Pay attention to your legs too, keeping them as close to your body as you can will A: feel bad ass when your rolling, and B: allow you to get a tight roll going and open up as soon as you feel your 3/4 there with some extra height to slow down the roll and land.
Thats great to hear though congrats on your roll. I hope more and more people who read this that haven't rolled yet post their experience when they land their first roll and their 2 cents on how they accomplished it. Some words of advice click better than others, lets get everyone viewing this thread Rolling!
Keep it up everyone!

Yeah, but if I hit them later they were bigger than what I wanted to hit...........gotta walk before I run. If I go big and get jacked up I'll be out for a while, vs picking some small, steep waves to learn on, which I didnt have either trip out:cool:
