bad crank??

so i just got a brand new crank from sbt (trued and welded) and i put the cases together today and was spinning the crank by hand and noticed that the journals were wobbling in and out

i called sbt and told them my problem but they said that it was fine????

just wanted to know what everyones opinion was if i should run it, get a new one or what

thanks Eric

How can the journals wobble? They are the section of the cases that the bearings sit in.

If you mean the rod wobbles or moves a little side to side that's normal. What you don't want is if you hold the crank firm and the rod has up and down play. I hope i described that ok.

So the rods have some play?

That's normal. Of course, there are limits for it. Check the Yamaha specs (if you don't have them, let me know....I should have it on my HD)
There's big end play (move the rods from side to side on the web pins holding the bottom of the rod) and little end play (hold the piston end of the rod and rock it back and forth)

Those are the webs, not the journals. And those should not wobble.

Just exchange it. My SBT crank has worked great. Actually, I think you ended up with one of the prize cranks from the Charity Raffle at the Rock N Ride. So, there is no receipt from it. Thats probably why the box has my name on it!

I usually run Hot Rods cranks if available but I have used many SBT cranks never really had any problems with them, what I run into is by the time I pay shipping both ways there is like $25.00 difference between the new crank and a rebuild,WPS gives me free shipping on the Hot Rods cranks,I usually get my $25.00 back at the end of the year when I sell the cores.

and you end up with a better crank as well.i've seen sbt cranks with as much as 1.2 thou radial play on the bearings NIB.they maintain it's within specs!

Thats odd, those are suppose to be welded.. Even if not welded it should not be Wobbly"...but they are suppose to be welded.

I bought a new SBT crankshaft from UncleHulka here on this site that he won at Daytona 2 years ago and have been running it for 2 seasons now with fully freestyle ported 61X cylinder@84mm/ ported 62Tcases, ADA 215 lb. of compression, MSD TL, Bpipe, dual 44 Blackjacks, etc. and its been a great crank. I plan on changing it our this winter.

Of course I would rather have a Hot rods, OEM, etc, but this SBT that i bought for $200 has been good to me.

Call up SBT and tell them that you got it at the freeride and somethings wrong with it. See what they say.

yea thats what i was planning on doing, but it seems odd that they would tell me that it was fine and that i should run the crank...that kinda got me pissed off bc if i would have ran it and it wrecked eveything idk what i would do
