I have to aggree with Matt, my ski was upside down for over a minute last weekend, rolled it over and it started right up with minimal water inj. I had bigger problems with the OE box, the Proks give much better snap and little to no water probs.IMHO, getting water into the bilge in the first place is the root of the problem. Stock FAs just mask it.
A good OEM hood seal with a well-sealing hood should take care of that quite nicely.
3. Never let go of your ski.
5. Never let go of your ski, I mean never.
9. Did I mention to never let go of your ski?
Your ski gets tumbled in the breaking waves, you can't get to it, it sinks.
And having to swim through breakers is annoying at best, and dangerous in bigger surf. Always hang on to the thing that has a motor to pull you out.
A few weeks ago I got separated from the stock Blaster I was riding - 50 yards apart in a matter of 7 seconds or less. I had to swim to shore (where the Blaster was already at, upside down and sunk).
Here you go bud, here’s some surf riding basics. I hope you guys have a good time on your road trip, if you make it as far South as Oceanside, post on the X and we’ll ride.
Ski set up- at minimum have the following;
Tow rope- If you have to tow a long way you want a long rope, like 40’ Nothings worse than getting rag dolled with jet wash in your face cause your tow rope is to short, other than towing for 30min because your ropes to short to tow fast.
Extra set of plugs- in a water proof bag
Can of either (Starting fluid) I don’t recommend you spray this in your motor ever. It’s for cleaning your plugs after you sink your ski. Gets ‘em nice and crisp dry for your best chance at getting a sunken ski restarted.
Plug wrench- self explanitory
Pole limiter- yeah get one of these.
Hood straps- probably not necessary for a beginner unless you have balls the size of Texas and are going for the ariels
Now the basics, Surf riding 101.
1. Have all the stuff above before your first ride.
2. It’s a good idea to hook up and ride with others riders experienced in the surf
3. Never let go of your ski.
4. Go at it at your own pace, don’t try and be a pro the first day.
5. Never let go of your ski, I mean never.
6. When going through an approaching a wave, try and hit it as straight on as possible
7. Jump or carve off the wave early when its still a roller, not when its pitching top to bottom, leave that to the pro’s
8. Have a good time, that’s what its all about.
9. Did I mention to never let go of your ski?
Turbo626 and I are planning a similar trip this year. Going to drive out about 3 weeks before the Surf Slam and try and meet up with as many of the West Coast riders as possible, head up for the Surf Slam, then head on back home. Should be an epic trip.
In your defense, those conditions were a bit unseasonal, the surf was huge and the current was crazier than normal. We were getting huge sneaker waves also from the wave surge, its not usually that intense most of the summer/fall unless there is something driving it well offshore.Exact thing happened to be on Crab's X2 at the Surf Slam. Pitched the ski and it was ripped to the beach, and then all the way another 20 yards back out to sea, and then blasted back by me and somehow I managed to snag it and take off. Surf is crazy out there, can't wait to get back!!
