Anyone check these out yet for use tracking a stolen ski? You can have up to 10 on an account. The battery lasts a year so you'd need to get a new one every year but it would fall under the same category as insurance which you renew every year as well. At $19.95 a year, it sounds doable.

If they are sealed then it should be possible to epoxy it or even glass it to the hull.

I just checked it out. Very cool idea, but you can only track it 150 feet from you phone, or at least that is how I am reading it.

It kind of contradicts itself...under the FAQs, It says what is the range and the answer is:
The range from your phone is 50 - 150ft depending on the environment. However, if any other Tile user's phone is within 50 - 150ft of your Tile, you will receive an update with the location of your Tile. When this happens, you will see a pin on the map view for your Tile. This essentially makes the range limitless once there are enough Tile users in your area.

That's a big "if" to rely on other users.

Good for finding keys or things you commonly use around your phone but not really good for tracking a ski. Too bad, it looked promising. :(

in that case it sounds like it wont be good unless everyone has that app running on their phone.

How about a tagg pet tracker? I had one on my dog. Its wifi based so it's not perfect but it did work okay. It was $100 ($75 with discounts) and $80/yr. additional trackers were only $1/mo after purchase of the device. Battery life was good when it was in range of the base station, and lasted a few days when not in power saving at home.

I didn't renew it for a few reasons. Its wifi based so it doesn't track like GPS. It would give a general idea but a dog can moved fast so I felt it was a little gimmicky. It was good for a puppy but my dog is now mostly voice and yard trained so I wasn't as concerned. Oh yeah, it also came off when she was playing with my parents dog and it got eaten so I didn't buy a new one.

She only wore it in the ocean once and 2 of the 6 pins turned green. If using it on an ocean ski, I would keep it in a drypak. It's also wifi based so not sure you could find a sunk ski with it. Also not sure what it means by wifi, you don't connect to it like a router. It may work on radio or something I'm not sure.

It's an affordable viable option. Charge it before you take the ski out and then it will probably hold the charge just fine between rides.

Tagg customer service sucks. I contacted them 4 times about not renewing because I couldn't find it on their site. They never got back to me. Just that the credit card on file was expired and they didn't get paid.

Doesn't sound like you are very impressed with that device yourself.

I just edited the title. I'm not looking for a solution, just wanted to see if anyone else had seen the new "Tile" yet.

I saw those tile locators also. I see some good potential there. OCD if you do decide to get one, the best test would be to, once its installed, have a friend drive your ski to some unknown location, say at least 5+ miles away and then see if you can track him. Let us know how it goes.

Can you get a tracker that will lead you to within a few feet? I tried the phone tracker app with both phones in front of me. It gave me an exact address of a house 2 blocks away... So even if the gps gets you within 100' you will have to go door to door to every house in the area and then hope when you knock on the correct door they are not going to lie to you.

It worked fine for what it was. There are pros and cons for everything. If I were to get another puppy then I would get another one for a year. I would not hesitate to hide one in my ski if tracking it were an objective of mine.

Would you consider the Tile for a $20 purchase price and no annual fee? It's only good for a year so it would match your need perfectly.
