sheesh....

from the dictionary

Acronym: A word formed from the initial letters of a multi-word name - NASA for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or PETA for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, for instance.
Abbreviation: A shortened form of a word or phrase used to represent the entire phrase. Abbreviations are used more often in writing than in speaking, but some like UK for the United Kingdom are commonly used in both formats.

CATL is cheap ass total loss for SX-Rs.

Acronyms spell words, abbreviations do not. All the things you listed are abbreviations, not acronyms.

CATS would be an acronym, for example.

I'm sorry, I don't want to cause an argument but I have to correct you on this for your future reference.

An acronym is the initials that stand for the word. (National Aeronautics Space Administration-NASA)

Abbreviations are shortening a word (wednesday-wed)

WTF, CATS, RN, TTT, those are acronyms.

It's ok but no, you're wrong.

Acronyms spell words, abbreviations do not. Acronyms are stated as words, abbreviations are not. WTF and TTT aren't acronyms, they're abbreviations. CATS is an acronym.

A lot of people get this wrong.

sorry KR my $$'s on the doc on this one!

Had to ask my American Literature Professor about this yesterday, this is what he said...

Acronym - Is a word formed from the "initial letters" of other words (Federal Bureau of Investigation - FBI)

Abbreviation - Is a "shortened" form of a word or phrase (Abbreviation - Abbrev.)

Mom has her Masters in English Literature, she is a English teacher and fully supports these definitions as well as my examples.

I don't care who is right, I just want to know what everyone is saying on here!
