I took the engine out to clean the hull and there are 2 1and 1/2" holes in the firewall bout 5" up-one on the left and one on the right-they are exposing foam in the hull-should they not be sealed off???

Those are normal. Yamaha glued top and bottom decks together, then filled in foam through those holes. And then they put a paper sticker on it to seal it.

Thanks guys-thats wut was there-some 'barley there' plastic stickers that came right off w/hull full of hot water and greased lightning.

Now that I know-I'll seal em off properly!

does the foam 'cap' keep it from getting waterlogged? (water in hull, accelerate and it goes into tray)

The foam gets waterlogged from:

The exhaust flange rivet holes
The HIN rivet holes
The rideplate threaded inserts
Water from bilge

The potential for a waterleak into the foam exists at every bondline, fitting, and bolt insert. This includes the driveshaft PVC tube.
