ok, so rivits drilled out, broke the adhesive bead with a chisel...

stuck a rod thru the pole bushing and alternated side to side with hammer blows, the end came off of the pole very easily, much easier than i expected.

I cut it back pretty far ( chop saw)

glued it back in....

check it out.

how short was this blue pole MattE?

the white one is now 1.5 inches shorter.
standing on the boat with the pole mocked up, it felt awkward forward too much... boat was flat though, in the water should be close to right... I might cut some more.....

Nice job you're gonna love it! Make sure you use stainless rivets and not aluminum. I like the way some folks have wrapped 6" of fiberglass tape over the junction to make it stronger.

I figured it was -3.5 or so.

right now I just sunk some scres init while the glue dries.

Ill use some rivets later.

I still havent figured out why the squarenose turn plate is not supposed to work on it?

Ill put it together later and photo, maybe yall can explain it to me then?

I used stainless bolts with big washers rather than rivets - the rivets tend to work loose over time and then the bond can break.

I thought of stainless bolts, and then acorn nuts on the bottom, with locktite.

Ill likely wrap the entire pole in cloth and epoxy to make it strong, and it will over lap both end pieces by at least an inch or so...

9 beers, one chop saw, one short assed pole. I tried that but only got to beer number 6. Maybe I'll try to do the job before I try to drink the beer next time.:beerchug:

haha. yeah it only took about 20 minutes actually.

I was talking about the 9 beers I had before to get the motivation, and then there were several afterwards while admiring my own handy work...

haha

Nice work for being intoxicated. Better than I could have done!
The turn plate off the square will work fine. It's the way the steering cable attaches to the pole that's a little different. You might have to make a small piece of alum shaped like a U to hold the steering cable. No biggie.

I see, I was out there scratching my head and I had about decided it had to be the steering cable.

sweet....

Now, 9 more beers, and Ill have the balls to try and shorten a stock turnplate....
