I agree from the sounds of it he wants to buy the sx and is looking to see what he will be missing out on.

Don't do it. my first ski was a 650sx and I wasted years struggling to keep up with the sj's that everyone else was riding. I dont care if I never had to drop a dime in it or change a plug, I missed out on all the fun. I thought I had a good ski until I rode a friends sj. it felt light, turned better, ran stronger and I was impressed most by how little effort it took to stay on the damn thing. where as with the sx I was always falling and jumping waves was being like being tied to a brick.

dont waste your time and money to ride now. save and get a sj and be happier in the long run. for one you wont be stuck with a beginner ski that you will quickly outgrow, you can find a cheap sj and if you save a little more you can get a nice ski that will run a long time.

WFO is the exception to the rule. He has a lot of experience with a lot of different skis and knows a great deal about a great deal. EXCEPT-he does not care for sj or following the crowd. nothing wrong with that. so if you have a lot of time and are willing to spend years to know what he knows so you can do what he does then go for it. but if you want to get into the right ski from the start... the choice is clear.

I also think its worth mentioning that if you want to ride surf or freestyle there is not one single ski in production today that is based off of the 650sx hull. No pros are riding em, no one is taking ideas from them, even kawasaki has moved on to something better. If you want to race around on flat water then maybe the sxr is the ski you want. a new sj will still be more fun for my money. and it will be able to transition to a great surf ski too. the sxr not so much.

Vumad and Jrslim are two diehard kawi guys and we have been hounding them for years to give up and those heavy pos skis, today both are sj riders.

Dude hull builders are even custom designing hulls to be able to run stock 701 motors and still be capable of flips and rolls.

This can go on as long as you want, in the end you know what the clear choice is. resist the urge to ride that pile and hold out for something better. or dont, I dont ride with you so I dont have to hear you whining about it. lol

by the way, welcome to the X and GET A SJ!

I just sold my highly modded 650sx on tuesday.. I just bought a 95 SN today..

I tradded my 550 sx(reed) for the 650sx... worst decision ever! The 650 was stable as hell and would turn great, so initially i was pretty happy, then after a little bit of time on the thing, you realize how big and heavy it is.. jumping becomes less fun, speeds aren't as fast as the should be(even with a ton of $$ into it) Its a good ski for a beginner, but like previously stated, you grow out of that FAST!

If you can find a SN 701 for around 1500, buy it. if you have that urge to be on the water like i did, you'll cave for the cheaper ski(which is fine) but know that after a few times out, you'll want more, and next season.. You'll be looking at this thread again.

If you dod take the cheaper route, it wont kill you.. thats what i did. I think it was probably better for me because if i went staright to the sj, id always have that urge to see how a kawi handled.. anyways.. to each their own, so maybe you should try out the kawi for a while. if worst comes to worst, sell it, buy a sj?

It's not about SJ for me. It's about Yamaha. Kawi made a :):):):)ty pump, motor and hull compared to Yamaha. It is true that, if I could go back in time, I would have bought the SJ I have now from day one. However, I'm glad I have my X2 and I'm not giving it up. I'd probably take my X2 over a SJ if they both had the exact same pump and motor, but that is not the case. The X2 has been an obsured amount of work to make it into what it is today, and it is still powered by Kawi.

I wont disagree that a Kawi can be a better platform than a superjet, but I will argue that the SJ is a better ski than a Kawi in a completely stock form. My X2 is a pretty solid ski, but after 3.5 years of modifying instead of riding, I'm tired. I bought a SJ because it's a better product in the showroom. Who cares what can be better when you only have one ski. Buy the one that is the most fun when you buy it, the one that's fun to ride w/o extra work.

I wish I could go back in time, buy my SJ and ride it for the last 5 years while I built a killer X2. I did the opposite, so all I have to show is a patchwork X2 (because I worked on it b/t my rides) and a lot of missed memories and good times.

Don't make the same mistake I did and buy a ski because of what it can be. Buy a ski because of what it is and enjoy it.

To sum it up... buy a superjet because it is better in stock condition than anything else you can buy. Then work on that awsome 650sx, X2 or w/e while you have an enjoyable ski to ride.

Koolaid is right. His extremely modified SX is awsome, BUT my all stock ready to ride SJ is awsome. Isn't the point to ride the thing?

I forgot!
over the years yamaha has made some of the coolest toys. big wheel, snoscoot, ysr80, banshee, rd350, oh yeah and the superjet. I really do like yamaha because they seem to get it right. Kawasaki has some cool toys too and on their skis i like a few things better that yamaha. I like the sxr flywheel/stator setup, ignition, and the entire e-box is good, and will probably use the sxr cases with a dasa 950 BB PV for my next motor in my superjet.

I will add this if you are going to buy an SJ at the very least buy something with a 701 in it, really if you can afford it any way at all buy a Round nose, I find nothing really appealing about a SN SJ with a 650 in it, heavy ski with a wimpy engine and a monster of a handlepole , the RN has a much lighter pole , a 701 engine and you can ride one and have a decent ski without having to do $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in mods just to have something decent.

I think you should bum a ride on a sn. One ride on a 650 sn with a pipe, and my sx was sold. It handled so much better and was ten times more fun.

WFO, I am pretty sure he is referring to you... cause clearly in all your years of "WeDoo-ing" SeaDoos and Kawis you were deprived and never got to ride a SN. :bad3:

I was just putting my two cents in on Waterbox's original question, however, as I read it again, i realize he has rode them. I was not responding to any of WFO's comments. I don't think the 650 SN feels that heavy, nor do I think the handlepole feels any heavier than that of my sx. Even with the 650, I think, in my own opinion, regardless of what others think, the superjet is alot more fun, for me, than the 650sx could ever be.

I'm sure the much more experienced riders/wrenches on this forum, such as WFO, would be able to provide you with much better, and more accurate information than I can. My information is based solely on my opinion, and not at all on fact. But opinion aside, I got rid of all my 650sx, in fact gave some away, and now ride superjets and other skis. I have no interest in ever riding a 650sx again. But what the heck do I know.

I love these kawi/yami battles! They never end! Its so much fun.

650 sx blows end of story, id suggest getting a SN with a 701 in it already, but even if you get a 650 SJ you can drop a 701 right in. When I first got my 650 SJ I thought it was great but now I ride my 701SN and I dont even ride the 650 SJ, but its still waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy better than a 650 sx. I tried to ride my brothers 650 sx and after about 2 minutes I said give me my SJ back.

Well apparently you don't know much, I have ridden plenty of SN's, RN's , Octanes, 550's,670's ,X2's,SXR'S, 750SX's SXI's and SXI pro's, a couple of XFT's and several other skis over the many years I have been in the watercraft repair industry , bottom line ride what you want and let everyone else ride what they want

I would get another 650 sx to cut the top off of and drag around the yard with my kid in it as a sled, other than that, I have no purpose for one.

I agree. I own a 650 SN and a RN. The 650 with no mods SUCKED. It could not get out of it's own way. Yes, the pole is probably the worst pole in the history of standups, and regardless that it has the same lower hull as a RN, to me they just handle lousy. The 650 now has a Coffmans sizzler, a head, bored nozzle, lightened flywheel, and a RN pole, so it is more enjoyable. But stock, I pretty much hated it. If it were my very first ski, maybe I would have had fun on it. But after riding my Kawi SxiPro and my RN, the 650 SN was a HUGE let down.

This is true. Everyone who has a pulse wants a superjet.

Really D roc. is this why I see thread after thread about people building Superfreak's, Bob's, Rok's, Matrix's, 300SX conversions, FX1's, WDK hulls, Stunt hulls, Lenzi1's, Q8's and the half a dozen other aftermarket hulls that are out there now, seems to me anyone with a pulse wants an aftermarket hull as in not a Superjet.

some good info here guys, thanks. I do like riding the SJ wayyy more than the SX. I'll admit that. The SX I rode was piped, and the stock SJ would destroy it, but I'm not concerned so much with power, I'm more concerned about handling. The Kawi seems top heavy, and likes to slide, so 180's are easy but I like the lateral grip of the yamaha more. I was wondering if it's easy to make the kawi handle more like the yamaha with a good ride plate or something...
