this is a super easy mod and it makes the 550 way easier to start. look for any starter out of a 1989-1994 sea-doo. I bought a new one from ebay for 100 bucks. only thing you need to do it find some longer bolts (see pictures) they need to be about and inch or so longer than the bolts for the 550 starter. the seadoo starter is skinnier and it has not bolt in the back that attaches it to the crank case other than that the fit is the same. once you do this you will never go back.

seadoos have been gay since WAY before the 3d

:welcome: :smashfreakB:

good idea with the starter, though. 440/550 starters are notoriously CRAP. aftermarket AND oem.

can u be a little more specific with the type...I need a new starter for my 550.
Thanks,
pete

you really can use a starter for any seadoo made through 1994. 1995 had a mix of a few that will work and some that wont. but all the 1994 model skis will work. just do a search for a 1994 sea-doo starter on ebay. that will get you what you want.

if the seadoo starter is longer than the 440/550 one then it probably has more winding area on the armature and more magnet surface area like the goki aftermarket starters, in wich case it is more powerful, it also eats more battery to use.

before i cut up and parted out a seapoo 580 that i had in my yard, i did a compression test on it. with 140ish psi, it turned the engine over much quicker than any 440/550 starter, but that couldve been due to a larger circumfrence ring gear. seemed like a stronger starter to me though......dammit!

I'm just wondering how it can be considered an "upgrade" from the regular starters if you don't find much differences in the way they perform....
