I finally gave up on being the guy on the rat bike at the rides and got a new 08 KTM 300 XC. I got it with the Recluse clutch and the left hand lever rear brake conversion since I ride super gnarly stuff. I broke it in at the Grassy Knoll Hare scramble in Connecticut. I haven't raced in over 8 years so I figured I better just stay out of trouble and get used to the bike. It turned out that on the 2nd lap of 4 I was in second in my class (C open). I paced myself and let the leader crash himself out to get into the lead by the begining of the 3rd lap (7.5 mile tracks) So as I was just trying to keep a good pace without crashing out I got that feeling deep down that said I need to find a crapper. So I ended up holding out for a few more miles but eventually leaned the bike against a tree and dropped a duece in the woods with bikes wizzing arond all over the place. Tell you what theough I rode like a new man after that little break for about 4 miles until my hands started to hurt again. Turns out I worked my way back up to 4th right on 3rd's back tire at the finish. I had a wicked good time and can't wait for the Unadilla GNCC. I heard that is a real ball buster. Here is a picture of my 300 the day I brought her home.

I knew I wanted the Recluse with the hand brake on my bike and the torque of the 300 is a perfect match for it. It still has the ability to pop the front wheel over a big log going 2 mph with just a blip of the throttle. But it really shines in the super rocky hills we have near me where my club (MVTR.org) puts on a scramble and an enduro. (Rocky Mountain Mountain Enduro) It will crawl up the super big rock sections if I want to go slow or I can grab the next gear up and plain out over the tops of the big stuff with out worrying I might screw up stall and loose my momentum. It is also insane on easy bermed up stuff when you come in fast and come out sideways usung the throttle to steer you around the corner. It always has power no matter what the situation. You really need to develope better throttle control if you are use to a small bike like my old KDX but essentially the power deliver is similar just a bunch more of it.

That hand brake allows you to drag the rear brake way easier in the turns with better feel especially in right handers. Dragging the brake a little settles th bike in the turn really nice. Kind of like engine braking on a 4 stroke, but I even hold the brake as I feed it power. Jean Michele Bale was famous for that technique but he used the foot brake and would go through a set of pads in one moto. I was worried I beat up my rear brakes but they still look perfect.
