If it bothers you so much, why not just dry those areas with a rag or paper towels or something? I suppose you could use foam to fill in the areas then a light layer of glass over. For the motor mounts you could use foam.....or just leave them be.

Generally speaking:
93 octane to 180
100 octane 180 to 200
105 octane 200 to 210
112 or higher octan. 210 and up
You can get away with 185, maybe even 190ish, on pump gas if you don't go extended runs at WOT
Agreed that a higher end gauge is best but as long as you're running relatively normal compression and are sure you are using the correct octane fuel then it's not the highest readings that really matter. The concern is the difference in readings between the cylinders, any gauge can give you that.
