It's not too late to take it back before the madness ensues. All of the stock steering systems are loose like that , you can take some of it out by installing bearings in place of the bushings but unless you remove the tilt function it will still be very loose, this is why people install...

I will agree that on an AC powered ignition system the engine block is ground , lawn mowers, weedeaters , small motorcycles , ATV'S and most Jet ski ignition systems work this way and yes once it is started you can remove the battery from the equation entirely and it will still run just fine.

BS yes it is true that the entire ski runs off the small gauge black ground wire that ends at the stator but if the negative battery cable is bad the small gauge black wire has no other ground path to the battery except for the ground cable , slice and dice that anyway you want to but bad...
