K&n's are the worst by far. Proks are pretty good if you run prefilters but sometimes the tops get filled with water. Stay away from anything with a cloth filter as they get soaked with water.
The compression is def that head gasket. How true is your head and cylinder?? It probably was over heating because of the head gasket but make sure to check all the lines and fittings.
