OEM Flywheel cover with o-ring groove??

Please excuse my ignorance if this has been covered, but I have seen the Cold Fusion Billet Flywheel Covers with the O-Ring groove and I was wondering if anyone out there has or can cut an o-ring groove into an OEM flywheel cover??

I always never had any problems with water intrusion on my Kawi (with the o-ring) but ever since I have had my superjet I have had nothing but trouble with water intrusion. I was hoping for a cost effective way to replace the gasket with an o-ring, and I really don't need to drop the coin on the billet cover if I can avoid it.

If someone cut an O-ring groove into an OEM cover, the thickness of the gasket would be missing. I suppose one could leave one washer in the bendix bushing in the cover out.

IMHO, that's not really necessary, though.
Keys to a dry interior:
1. Use a new OEM gasket every time.
2. Use 1211 or grease on the starter where it enters the cases.
3. Use 1211 on the stator wire grommet and the wires.
4. Use 1211 on both sides of the gasket.

I used to have the same water (leaking) issues. After using sealants and having scraping fun on disassembly, I ended up just using a heavy waterproof grease on everything (especially a heavy coating on both sides of the gasket). It never leaked and was easier for cleanup and reassembly (the gasket doesn't wear out with grease).

BTW, I now run a Cold Fusion cover that also doesn't leak.

Do you think it would matter that the gasket thickness were missing?? Its not like adding a timing advance where the the pick-up is moved. I would suspect the spring would just take up the slack of the missing gasket and I think there should still be enough clearance for the flywheel.

I have been thinking about goin with a O-ringed cover for some time. I can't really comprehend spending $25.00 on a flywheel cover gasket. One thing I will say is only go with the oem gasket if you want to save yourself the scraping chore. I ordered one assuming it was a Yamaha gasket, won't make that mistake again. I used 1211 and the paper junk just split/ tore equally, leaving both the cases and cover needing to be scraped.

^^ I think I just saw that on surfersmurfs ski....some am black paper piece of garbage! Took longer to scrape it off than it did to rebuild his top end!!

I pay less than $10 for an OEM gasket. Whoever is paying $25 is getting ripped off.

I've used OEM gaskets with JSS ski grease with great success. No water intrusion. And just as Matt said, it is very important to grease up the starter where it enters the cases and the stator wire grommet. It doesn't hurt to replace the o-ring on the front of the starter also.

All that being said, I now run a Cold Fusion Billet flywheel cover... I love testing Cold Fusion parts for Carl. I have not removed it since installing, but I think I'd probably have a problem by now if I did have water intrusion.

I tried to run my 07 without a gasket and the cover bottomed out on the dowel pin and I had a nice gap where the mating surfaces never contacted. Eveything snugged up nice and I wasn't the wiser till one year later when I opened up the cover and found this...

I tried this with a HASS Machine and it was tricky. I had to get a scan of the gasket surface to model the groove. It would have took me quite a bit of time to get it figured out with a jig to mount the flywheel cover in and so forth. I gave up cause I ran out of time.
 
Yeh I do Imagine it would be tricky at first, but I figure after the first set-up someone could bang em out in a hurry. Don't people get OEM heads o-ringed from time to time??? Who does that for you?? Maybe they can help me out.

Yes, the cheap paper gaskets blow it big time and can not be reused if they are assembled with 1211. I paid $25 at a local shop I despise for the OEM gasket, I also picked up two BR8HS's at $4.20 a piece:ugh2:. Even if I buy online from any of the big names, I will end up paying $7.00+ for shipping plus the wait.

Next time I even think about pulling the cover im going aftermarket O-ringed.

I don't think I have ever seen the stock flywheel cover milled for an O-ring though. If there were no clearance issues or they were addressed it would be awesome though.
