Questions! Please help

ok so, I go to flush my 08 sxr from a day in the gulf. After about two - three minutes i turn the water off and walk back to the ski to turn in off when out of no where it revs up on its own. I pulled the key out and it continued to run, At this point I panic and pull the plugs, nothing. (now this has happen before when i have had a little gas left and never lasted more in a few seconds, but i had about a half a tank this time.) It ran for about 40 ish seconds and then slowly shut off. Honestly i thought it was going to blow up.

My questions are:
Why did this happened?
How did it happened?
Why after pulling the plugs did it continued to run?
How to shut the ski if it happens again?
And how to prevent it from happening again?

The spark plug look like trash now and I'm going to replace them is there any other thing i should look at before taking it back out?

Also any other tip or advice would be great.

Thanks

Two possiblities; (actually the same)
low on fuel
air leak around the intake system
The ski was running away because it was lean.
Often keeping the throttle wide open kills the ski ( no BS!), do some searching.

Happend to me once. Putting your foot over the exhaust will stop it....

You definetly have an air leak. I would do a leak down test. Usually its an intake manifold gasket or a crank seal.

U can also put the choke on full if the ski runs away on u again. Were the plugs dry and look fried when u removed them, if so u def. got an air leak somewhere causing the ski to run lean.

When you first put the ski in the water, does it idle high for a few minutes? Then he idle drops?

my ski has a bit of a high idle only b/c of the set up. i raised the idel bc if not it will stall in the water. i havent put it back in the water yet and wont be able to till the end of april. I off spring break.

thanks for all the tips and i will sure do them if it happens again,
but can someone explain to me how the engine is able to run after i pull the boots of the plugs off.

When u pull the boots off and the motor continues to run because of a condition called Dieseling. the same concept as a diesel motor the plugs are burning so hot u no longer need the spark to create combustion. This can be caused by a severe lean condition , maybe an air leak on the intake side of the motor, crank seals, etc.... somebody said above to do a leak down test and that is ur best bet to see if u do have a leak, then find out where it is. to stop the lean condition. Do u run stock carbs? and did u tune ur own carbs?

yes they are stock with a blowsion fuel pump added. i did change out the needles, and did some self tuning with the help of jj. i should probably change out the seals huh?

Air leak for sure!

1. Check fuel lines to make sure they are tight and not cracked.
2. Tighten down all intake parts (carbs, intake)
3. Tighten down Cyllinder to Cases (often comes loose)
4. If those don't fix it, crank seals (not usually a problem on a Kawi)

If it continues, replace gaskets on cyllinder to cases, intake, carbs.

To stop it when it runs away....:439:
A. Choke it
B. Foot over exhaust
C. Hands over Flame Arrestor

Do not pull plug wires!!!

I would wait on the seal check until you check through everthing else that could be causing a air leak first. Definatley do a leak down test to be 100 percent. it does sound like a good air leak somewhere.
