Mold release wax is only like $10-15 bucks and can be purchased at any Fiberglass supply house. Google for the one located closest to you.

if you are only going to make one and you are not concerned about the finish, you can use packing tape(similar to scotch tape). Next cheapest would be PVA (buy at fiberglass store) the application is easy and finish is ok. if there isnt much detail needed you could try swran wrap. If you lay swran wrap, then your fiberglas, then another layer of swran wrap on top then cover it in foam rubber then a piece of wood. Then clamp it or put weight on it it will be a redneck vacuum bag system. (just watch for wrinkles in the swran wrap because they will show) Grease will not work because the fiberglass will mix with the grease and come out all messed up.

If you are in a bind the next closest thing to PVA is Hairspray... Think about it... you spray it on your hair it dries up in the form of a film but yet is water soluble when u want to get rid of it. I have used hair spray with perfect results. The hairspray may leave a little bit more of a texture on the finished pc as compared to PVA sprayed through a quality hvlp gun.

I would think polyester resin would eat right through saran wrap, but I will admit I have never tested the theory.

LISTEN to FLASH !!!!! Cheap material and half @ss methods will give you nothing but inferior parts and long term headaches. Spend the cash and you will be happy u did later.... The amount of time one spends on making a mold and working on a project of this nature is not worth cheaping out on some PVA

X2 Do it right. A good wax like SC Johnson Paste wax ($9 available at many grocery stores in the floor cleaners section) is perfect for mold release. PVA can be sprayed on to the mold after waxing, and works very well. I get it for $20 a gallon, and use a $10 paint gun to apply it.
( I have 10 years experience making composite parts )

Personally I wouldn't spend the money for mold release wax,its basically just 100% pure carnabua wax,I usually use mothers Gold or even Kit car wax,wax it ,let it dry and buff it off, repeat this several times.Spend your money on the PVA and apply it correctly, when applied correctly it is smooth and shiny, don't skimp on the PVA even if you have to apply it multiple times to get it right.

I made a fiberglass rideplate for my superjet last season. I broke my metal one and was in a bind to ride n a couple days so I simply layed duct tape over the broken one and layed the glass straight ontop of that. Worked great for teh time being until I got a new stocker.

I've used duct tape on top of cardboard to make hoodliners several times. They pop right out.

I saw a website that showed how to copy motorcycle fairings before. they laid plastic wrap over the original.

I've also used packing tape as a release agent on a hull repair before too.
