1995 seadoo xp

I will put a fully charged jumpbox (i know the jumpbox is good) on the battery cables and it will barely even turn the ski over. It really seems like it has a really close to dead battery and its not getting enough to turn it over, but the jumpbox is fine. It just really seems like its struggling to turn over. Also i put the jumpbox on it today and saw a orange glow on the negative cable where the jumpbox connected. I went to see what it was and the ski had melted some of the metal on the connecter and basically saudered it together. it also seems to drain the jump box really quick. It does have spark btw.

Thanks for any help.

First off never jump off a Seadoo, its a good way to fry a very expensive MPEM,second trying to jump through a dead battery is not a good idea either,buy-borrow-rob-steal a known good battery and start from there. Now it sounds to me like your starter has shorted out internally, yes its a beach but pull the starter and see whats going on with it,glowing-melted wires means a dead short somewhere, the starter is the only component in that system that will cause that kind of problem.

Wow didnt know you couldnt jump off a seadoo. I've already put a good batery on it and it does the exact same thing. So does it probably need a new starter?

before you buy a starter I'd check the voltage at the starter and resistance on the cables to make sure it's not rotten cables or something.

Yea, ill do that first. I did move the connections on the battery cables and inside the rubber covering there was water and it dripped out. So it could easily be rotten.

Rotten cables usually won't melt the cables, its easy enough to do a voltage drop test though,a resistance test may or may not tell you what is going on there.

How do you do a voltage drop test? It didnt melt any cables, it heated up the connector on the jump box and melted some of that metal.

I could explain it too you but seriously just google it there are several good articles on voltage drop testing that will be more help than my explanation ever could.

if your ski has been sitting for a while, i would pull the plugs, and see if it turns over. watch, and see if oil comes out of the plug holes. we get MANY doo's in the shop here, that fill up with oil, and will not turn over, or they turn over hard( like a dead, or bad starter)

also not uncommon for the oil in the jet pump to be gone, and pump bearings fried.

could still be a starter though.

just giving you some other things to look at.

I don't mean to sound stupid but what is the reason.
You already said it will fry stuff but...Why?
What is so different from a Car? I would assume it would be the same.
I have never done it as I always charge my batteries but you never know..
so this applies to ALL jet skis then.....right?

the seadoo's are very "voltage sensitive". it says right on the ski, not to boost battery while installed. it WILL damamge the MPEM.

yes, i have seen other machines have the CDI fried from people charging, or jump starting them, with the battery hooked up. ( polaris seems to be another that is sensitive)

i persoanlly would not recomend jumping, or charing any skis battery, while it is hooked up. ( i tend to be over safe in my thinking though)

I unfortunately own a 96 XP800 and from all the problems I've had with it I would say that WFO and J-Zig are right on the money with what they brought up. There are a few additional weak points on these things...aside from the entire thing lol. They were really bad for breaking the ground cable off under the right front of the engine. Your ground could be partially broken at the lug connector making a very limited current flow which in turn prevents the starter from getting enough throughput. Remove it from that location and bolt it onto a spot toward the rear of the engine closer to the black box. Another thought too would be the brushes in the starter.

Being a 95, I would imagine that your brushes are on their last legs. As mentioned, pull the starter and check the brushes. If they are about a 1/4" long then you need to get new ones. They don't come as a pair either, you have to order both separately. Check into those two areas as well as the ones mentioned by WFO and Zig, if it's still being a Bomby......then sorry to say it but you're most likely into some serious problems. One other spot you could look into but it requires a lot to get inside of is the flywheel cover. Check to see if maybe the trigger coil or mag cup is rusted up and interfering with the cranking.

Oh and if the booster pack did trash anything electronic, you might be SOL...BRP stopped production of electronics for all Sea-Doo models from 96 and older back in June of 2007.
