I would consider what Darin is sayin. seems like I just kept having issues until one day it locked up. no more "okay this is the last day and then I will get a new drive" now I don't even think twice. although I am sure its not as cheap for a laptop but if you wait much longer you will have a nice paperweight there.

last time I bought 2 drives and loaded em both so when one pukes out I can just swap the plug. plus I got the external drive so I better not lose any more info. friggin usbs and routers, fax copy scanner, speakers, bass. its friggin almost like Edwins old school lab in here. lol

since my drive still works is it plausible to make a backup of it to a new drive and just install that drive so I don't have to reload everything that is on there?

I had to backup to my ext hd and install all my programs to the new drives. didn't chris give you some sort of program that did a drive to drive dump?

yes, that's a normal thing I do.

however, if you did (probably) have bad sectors, you may have some corrupted files which if you copy the drive will be copied that way and you might suffer from that.

Driveimage XML is what I use for copying drives. http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

what hardware do I need to copy the drive. I have a 500 gig external drive that I use to back up my desktop. it sounds like I need an external that can hold my new laptop drive.

Yea you would need that and some imaging software. I use r-drive....from r-tools.com.

I rarely make images of 1 machine though...only when I have a few identical machines.

I can use a Dell restore disk and reload a couple of programs pretty quickly so I usually just reload stuff manually if its a single machine.

If it's a sata drive and you have a desktop with sata, it will plug right in and you can go from there.

Since you're gonna replace the drive anyways, it seems, you might as well try the combofix.org program I mentioned. Many people, including your's truely, swear by that program. It will remove any and all spyware/malware/rootkits.

U have to be careful where you get it from. It's strongly recommended to only download it from combofix.org.

Anti-spyware can mess it up, so it's recommended to close those before running. AVG hasn't messed it up when I ran it.

EDIT: I did have it remove a file that windows needed to boot. If I remember correctly, it was infected anyways. It lists the files that it's gonna remove and keeps a good log of what it does. The file it removed was easy to replace.

Oh, and I give CNET about as much weight in my opinions as I do CNN. :jester:

Copy your hard drive or whatever and get the new 1 setup, then you could try combofix just for S&G. I'd personally recommend combofix before getting a HD. I also do not believe in reinstalling windows to fix problems like this as the same problem will crop up again unless you find out why it came about in the first place or how to stop it from happening again.

Yea I only reload because time is money or when setting up new customers. I want it set up my way so they I don't have to reload next time.

Clearly some if not most residential machines I get are soooo messed up I will not even bother doing anything other than a fresh reload including a clean new partition. Get their data, reload, return.

I only try to figure out what happened and why once in a while just to keep up with stuff. Soooooo many hours messin....no thanks.

what a pain in the ass this has been.

I bought a 5 in 1 adapter and a new hard drive.

I can't find my windows xp disk. I can't find a place to download a copy of xp to use my legal key with either.

Now I'm trying to image the existing drive and restore in on a new one but driveimage XML does not work well with windows 7. I'm going to try and use r-drive next. hopefully this works.
