If you think that drive is toast, send it my way. I'll pay for shipping.

I'm betting your problem is related to spyware/malware. Of course, assuming your drive is greater then 100GB.

Spyware/malware doesn't cause chkdsk to take 14 hours.

should I cancel the virus scan and just back up the files I need to keep?

I would.

Drives are so cheap, it's not worth my time to mess with it plus once you start getting a lot of bad sectors it's only going to get worse with time.

And good idea keeping it!

I am working on a deal to purchase 50 spotless warrantied off lease Dell D810's. XP laptops will be timeless and of great value even if 7 is good...

I would be curious to see how fast chkdsk /r worked if that drive was slaved to another system.

That is how I always do it as I have seen it not work on a infected OS. It ALWAYS works if slaved though...assuming the drive is good.

These are good to have:

I have 2 and use them often.

I have 2 sata/ide (both 3.5/2.5) and 2 of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707175&Tpk=satadocku2e

Can't live without them.

I'm glad I don't deal with video cards anymore---business desktops with integrated video FTW, and the one guy that does a lot of autocad on dual monitors gets business workstation so it's all factory/warranteed, the rest are laptops.

chit... once i set up one person with dual monitors, everyone in the company (including clerical) thinks they have to have duals. and a single big widescreen is not good enough. :slap:

We will be going to laptops for most.

Same here, but it was with the articulating monitor arms. I ended up having to buy like 10 of them, plus one for dual 19" monitors.

It's crazy how standards have changed, now my standard monitor is a 22" widescreen.

Laptops with a monitor work really well IMO.

I personally don't like lappys...to fragile and not power gobblers!

I quit using them a year or so ago....I even put a low profile desktop on the floor next to the recliner in the living room....with a 15" LCD and cheap keyboard and nice thumb trackball (the only mouse to use!!!!).

Yea 22" wide here too! Perfect size.....and 2ms makes it OK for gaming....but I still love a good 22" CRT.
