Taking on water??

I have two new 09 SXRs, both less than 15hrs on them. One of them is taking on water?

My first thought was the hood. Ive eliminated that. The wifey drives this one and rides very conservitively, no subs or aggressive turns.

I plugged the front intake hole on the hood. Drained it, drove it for about five minutes and tied it up to the boat, brought it back and another 6-8in of water in the engine bay. WTF???

Any common issues with stuff not being sealed? Any ideas? Any tricks of trade on finding leaks? I really have no clue.

It started taking on more water than usual after the first time or two out. Now the stupid thing will take on at least 6-8in of water and probably flood itself. My other ski only takes on the expected amount of water. Seems my first mod will be bilge pumps.

Just figured Id pass it past you guys before I bring her to the kawi stealership

The bilge and Versiplug-R will address the symptom, but the problem is still unknown. That needs to be found. Check to see if the bilge water is hot (cooling lines) or normal (intrusion).

These things are bone stock, I am not familiar with what type of bilge system these things have if any. I have never worked on anything boat related so, this is all new to me. Everything seems pretty straight forward though.

The cooling line is the what runs out the side correct?

Sorry for the gee wiz questions but, .......gotta learn somehow

the cooling lines will come fromthe pump through the hull and to the exhaust manifold. then they will come from the head and head pipe to the pisser on the side of the hull. your ski has a stock bilge system so there will be a fitting on the bottom of your exhaust that leads to a siphon that is located in the rear bottom of you engine compartment. After the siphon it will exit the hull into the pump cavity.

Check every hose in your ski to see if it is cracked, has a hole in it... make sure they are all on tight. Next check you exhaust couplers(rubber pieces that hold you exhaust together) make sure they are secure and not melted or cracked. Also ensure you exhaust manifold and head pipe are tight to your motor. Then move to the water box and make sure all the hoses are good and the waterbox is secured to the hull. then check the hull of cracks/holes

Running it on the trailer with the hood off is a good way to check for water leaks on hoses and such. I found my head pipe gasket leaking water that way.

same goes for running it on the trailer with the nose tied down and rest in the water, give it some throttle too
sometimes you need it under load to check for leaks
when you back it down the ramp, good way to check, but make sure other boaters arent around, they may see that as annoying

that how i found my head leaking problem, thankful it was an outward leak

make sure the hose for the stock siphons are tied upward, if not it can get water that way

Is it leaking while the boat is not running in water? Remove the hood and see if it fills up.
It could be leaking from the drain plug being loose or driveshaft seal if leaks while floating.

Side note-
IF anyone needs kawasaki screw in versiplugs I have some brand new. $30 shipped.
I'm friends with owner of Pwcdoctor.com He gave me a bunch to bring to WV race and this what I have left over.

So, I pulled her out of the garage.........ran it and checked everything. I have no clue! I cant figure out where its coming from. I checked every hose and exhaust connection I could get my hands on. I also filled the boat back up with water (about six inches) to see if I noticed anything coming out the grate area.

Im gonna have to take it in.

The idiots at the dealership bent the handle pole locking pin and damaged the fiberglass anyway, so I need to bring it back for them to fix that.

Im also gonna order two versiplug-r s' to install meanwhile until I get the bilge pumps installed.

My only issue is that I bought this one from a bike dealership, I doubt anybody there knows what the hell they are doing, considering the damage to the handle pole
