SN cut off while riding and then initally wouldn't restart???

Today after about 2 1/2 hours of riding, on my way in my SN cut off as though I'd pulled the lanyard out or like I'd run out of gas. Initally it would crank, but not fire. Aftter about 4-5 attempt of trying to re-start it I switched to reserve thinking maybe I'd run out of gas on the main line. Then after 3 or 4 more attempts it fired (in a slow muffled fire). I rode back to the ramp(1/2 mile or less) and expecting to see almost no gas, but there was plenty of gas (in between a 1/2 and 1/4 tank). I turned back to ON from Reserve and it fired right up. I kept turning it off and then attempting to re-start it and every time it fired right up on the first attempt as though nothing had ever happened.

I didn't re-ride it because it was getting too dark there was too long of a no wake zone to go through.

When I got it on the trailer and tried to re-start it, it strongly fired right up as thought there had never been an issue. And when I got it home it also fired right up on the first attempt as though there had never been an issue.

So, all that said can someone tell me what might have caused it to cut off and initially not re-fire for 8-10 attempts? My buddy said, "don't worry about it," but I'm concerned. Should I be? And if so, what could this be?

THANKS!

check the start stop connections near the ebox, their should be two connections from the start stop switch , put some dielectic grease in connection, the same thing happened to my sn and blasters and other skis that have had same problem as yours

When I had my clogged carb problems (see here -> http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/55235) it ran like crap in the water, but it fired right up when on land and when I was flushing it. It took me maybe 45 min from start to finish to open the carb, check the jets and hook it all back up. Just something else to check if you've got time.

I have had that issue on my RN before. I just chalked it up to the pick-up was out of the fuel too long from bouncing or what-not and it was starved for fuel and was just pumping some air through.

Got a primer on that ski? My primer went south on me this weekend. It was sucking air and when it shut off it was like holy :):):):)...felt like I dropped an anchor of the back of the ski. It shut off, dead, no sputtering or nothing, just instantaneous stop. Got it running again, and it did it a few more times. Noticed air in the lines when I got back, popped in a new primer, and all was well again. Freakin primers don't last for crap. I am going to just make it a habit of putting a new one in every spring when I de-winterize.

You wouldn't happen to have an MSD enhancer cdi in it, would you? My FX-1 did the same thing last season. I swapped out the 10 year old MSD unit, installed the stock cdi to verify, and that's what it was. Now I need to get a new MSD enhancer :17:

If you were running fairly fast at the time it could also be a plugged fuel screen inside the carb. Those will give you the same symptoms. Been there........thought I blew my motor up in the middle of my very first race, but it was just a plugged screen. It would crank but not start. They towed me in to shore and it started and ran fine.

i do have a primer, but it's pretty new. i just go it about 6 weeks ago. I've ridden about 7 or 8 times with it so I hope it's not that.

did you have to replace your fuel screen?

If you use a bulb style primer try installing it under the hood, that will make it last for years.

When I got my ski it had the primer under the hood. I am not a fan of that idea, anymore. If you get water ingestion far from shore you are screwed. Either swim it in to pull the hood to pump your primer, or take your hood off in the middle of the lake/ocean and risk having it sink to the bottom if things go bad. I put mine back in the dash after I lived through this scenario.

You can just clean them out. It's worth checking.
Just pull the carb out and pull the 4 screws out on the fuel pump side of the carb(side with lines coming in and out). There is a little black round thing that goes into the carb body. It is a cylinder shaped fuel screen. Usually a little carb cleaner and compressed air will clean it out well. I have seen them all filled up with fuzzies and junk several times.
