battery

alright i did some searching and read up on oxnards post but i still want to know what the culprits could be for my battery not staying charged longer than a week.

its a fairly new oddessy battery

so..bad battery, not charging while riding, short in the wires somewhere, is there anything else that could be making my batter die.

no i do not have total loss but i do have an MSD enhanser

Three of the four batteries in out boats/skis dies over the winter. Either wont hold a charge, or get some kinda error when we try to charge them. Batteries suck... time for a solar powered starter i think

thats not a bad idea. what if you just lined your handle pole with solar cells and got a monster capacitor? or have the charge go straight to your battery? this would always keep charging the battery so it would always be ready to go and wouldn't be toast after winter... if you kept it out side or inside with uv light...

Maybe the battery was never charged properly from the beginning and therefore would kill it before it's ever used. Could be bad wiring or a short. Could be your starter is dying and causing excessive load on the battery when you crank it. Maybe you start/stop switch has condensation inside of it and the starter switch is touching just enough to not crank but draw a load.

Since you are using this on a charging system, maybe the wires allowing for spark are good but the wire that feeds juice back to the battery is shot. A quick electrical check on the stator could rule out any stator problems.

Try to isolate the problem. Charge the battery to full out of the ski and come back in an hour to test the voltage after it's stabilized. Then come back after another hour or two and test the voltage again...Write these down because you'll probably forget. Put the battery back in the ski and try to recharge it if it will take anything. Measure the voltages again before and after the same time frames and see if there is a greater drop in the ski than out of the ski. This will tell you if the ski is draining extra juice.

Best way to find electrical problems is to break out the multimeter and start testing everything like a kid who just got his first socket set and is desperately searching for a loose bolt to tighten.

charge it... then throw a volt meter on it... it will read around 12v while off. Start the ski, and have the volt meter on it... it should read close to 13v - that means it's charging while it runs.

if it doesn't read close to 13v then it's not being charged. Could be a bad rectifier or stator. Hopefully it's just the rectifier though.

Why check the charging system when it doesn't stay charged after it's left off for a week?? Mine doesn't charge the batteries when the engine isn't running.

Isolate if it's the battery, first. Charge the battery and unplug it COMPLETELY from the ski. Leave it for a week and let us know if it's still charged, or dead.

Eric, if it's dying while sitting, my SXR did this after installing the new ignition, just unhook the positive lead off of the battery, while the ski is off. Then grab a multimeter and go from the battery thru the multimeter to the cable and see if it is reading any voltage. If so you have a leak, if not is should be the battery. If it is doing it while riding, thats a different story.

yea im trying to figues it out but the only problem is that my dad is the one with the volt meter and hes never home....but i think it had to be either my charging coil bc it looses alot of cranking power after 5 minutes of riding....or something is drawing power
