Best way to check if I have a bad battery or bad charging stator

Okay, so I know crap about these electircal systems. I had a dead battery last weekend that caused a lot of drama and involved a long tow back home.

How can I check if I my battery is bunk or if my stator is not charging my battery? The battery is only 5 months old. Its one of those Jet Works KB35XC batteries. I wouldn't think that it is bad already, but who knows.

So how do I test both my battery and my stator's charging system?

If after testing both and they are good, does that mean I probably have a ground some where that is draining my battery?

okay, I'm not doubting you, but I thought there were two separate coils for charging and what ever the one is called that controls the spark. Guess I'm wrong?

Three coils total:

Pulser coil - the small guy, signals the CDI to fire the plugs. If this one is broke, your ski cranks, but does not run at all.

Lighting coil - charges the battery

Charger coil - provides the needed energy to the CDI to fire the coils.

at least tell em about the 2x4

Yes, please do. :haha:

I had the same issue when I got my 98 this summer, turned out to be the wire to the voltage regulator was toast, and no fuse anywhere. I replaced the regulator and did some rewiring, good as new.

ill tell ya cause he wont...so anyways oxnard and i went riding with brett (on the boards)..oxnard brought his MINT condition square with a 701 for brett to ride.(we were working on bretts ski)..

well the spot we ride is about a 2mile ride through thick kelp to get to...the surf was fun..about waist high but clean..we rode for about 40min and i was getting low on fuel..we stopped to rest and when brett went to start his ski it wouldnt go..

brought em both up on the beach hooked the square up to oxnards rn with the rope and now the rn wont start(dead battery)..they pull em both back on the beach and start messing with the rn...

well they just so happen to pull the square right up next to a 2x4 sticking up out of the sand...they are messing with the rn, not paying attention to the square when brett looks over and realizes the square is getting rolled by the whitewater right onto the 2x4 piercing the side of the MINT square..all the way through..

anyways they got the rn fired with the square battery(luckily chris is smart enough to bring tools) and they comenced the 45min tow..luckily i didnt run out of fuel cause i was on fumes when i got back...if they didnt get the rn running one of the skis would have spent the night cause you cant get within 2miles of where we rode with a truck..fun fun

Get it straight, it was a 4x4 that pierced the square :skull2:

but ya, all that happened. drama. and I only had tools b/c we had the square, if I would only have had the round. I am now trying to devise a small tool holder for the round. Maybe somewhere on the hood liner.

Yes! :bigok:
However, that only applies for the stock CDI.
With an MSD Enhancer, if you take the battery off, the ski will die no matter what.

For proper diagnosis, you need to take resistance measurements of the stator coils (those don't necessarily tell the whole story either, though)
