Exactly!!! The way to win the game is to offer the cheapest price. Make your product as inexpensive as possible and deliever it slightly above your best price. Recoop your costs quickly to make up for the initial investment, and when it starts getting splashed, match the price.

Filing for a patent is only going to increase your investment costs, and it's not going to deter very many people. Even if you do deter the big guys, you're still going to have guys selling them to their buddies locally. It happens with the tubbies. The nice thing about your conversion hood and the X2 sponsons is that there's not enough people in one place that people can sell them locally. They are forced to put their reputation on the line by posting it publically.

I agree with, except the red

The legal wording in patents amazes me. I'm filing for a couple patents at work and I provided the lawyers a description of the parts and then they write it all up. I barely understand the description when it comes back for me to approve and sign.

one of the requirement: You have to describe it so that, someone in your industry can build it.

Did you sign it?

vumad- the money is so tight on some of this stuff that making a part for 50.00 profit when it takes hours to layup, gelcoat, foam, cut, box, ship is just not worth it and the cost of materials. I am starting to see why hoods and hulls cost what they do.

I can't justify making stuff when I can do much better fixing skis instead of making parts. it will become a "when I get around to it" and you know how much free time I have.

thats true. price needs to be able to justify materials + shop time

I wonder if someone will ever step up and build a plastic injection mold for a complete composite hull/hood.

Just push a button a make a killer lightweight high strength composite hull !!:Banane09:

a patent search alone is 3500$ if done by a patent attorney. My ex-girlfriend's dad was one. Once the patent is pending, you are safe, but that 3500$ only guarantees the search, if it comes up too close to another product or unable to be patented, then you are out of the cash... It's very expensive...

you better be able to make a lot of cash off it if you plan on patenting it

you know that's one of the easiest parts, www.uspto.gov , then patent search/look @ classifications "PWC". If it's particular to a jet ski, then the class will only apply to that, ie. it won't be under motorcycle class, that narrows your search down.....you can easily do that, less than a couple hrs. free

Sounds like someone has been giving you the wrong facts :sneaky:

ha ha ha... a little different than internet searching... funny though

Who is submitting your drawings??
doing all the proper paperwork?

Christ, if you have the text the wrong size in the drawings they will send it all back...

I used to do patent drawings for 150$ per drawing... sometimes 3-4 per submittal. Trust me I know the procedure. Unless things have changed drastically in 4 years I am correct about the cost.

My guess is Patent dwgs may be alittle more now. I did 13 drawings. Luckily it's a bi product of my computer modeling. Funny, It's also the same computer model I used for the 3D router to get my physical model cut from foam.

The uspto.gov site is about as dry as it gets.

But the paperwork is really easy, there's a checklist. Plus a few patent books help you get from pt. A to B.

Again, the offers out there, if someone need help PM me

Isnt there some thing about a 10% variance?

All these items seem like such a tiny market it would be a complete waste to patent them. Am I right?

Maybe if you sold one to every ski there is and then they had to be replaced every two years.
