Sad Day at the River today.

Went riding today on the x-2. Riding around for a while then I noticed one of the local party boats, Gateway Clipper, really close to the shore. These are pretty big boats to be close to the shore. They began to wave me to the shore. So I see two people in the water waving their hands frantically. So I run over there. The woman was pretty upset. I thought they might have lost their dog in the water. I was trying to find out what was wrong. She said that is was a man. I was like ohh crap. She asked me to run over to the clipper and get a life preserver. On the clipper there was Cop who called river rescue. So I ran back over to the couple in the water. By the time I got back to them river rescue showed up. The told me to leave out of the immediate area and I did. I rode around down stream just to be another pair of eyes out there. I rode around for a good while and then saw the divers surface. They found the man. He was pretty close to where he went under. They began CPR on him. They then took him to the dock and loaded him into an ambulance. I just heard that he is in critical condition. He was under for 15 min.

From what I was told he went in the water to get a dog that went out pretty far. I guess he then didn't come back up. I think that the man's son's were there. There was a younger boy on the shore holding a dog and crying hysterically. I think that one guy in the water was also a son.

Everything happened so fast. Kinda makes you think back and wish you could have done more. My prayers go to the family. You never know what can happen.

I experienced a similar situation when I was younger at the colorado river. Only I didn't witness it, and the guy didn't make it. What I did witness was his body floating near the launch ramp.

Unfortunately, about 5 years ago, an acquaintance drowned at the colorado river as well. She was hanging about at the rear of the boat. They suspect that the carbon dioxide from the boat caused her to pass out, and she drowned.

As much as I love the water, things can definitely go to hell in a hand basket real quick.

Here's two incidents that have happened just a week or two ago and within a quarter mile or two of where our cabin is (we're at the 3mm)

First one I'm told he somehow hit his head when climbing up a ladder to the dock and it broke away on him. The second one was just plain uncalled for, kids were drunk and being stupid, the driver got arrested for a BWI and I don't think they've found him yet, he went in at a very deep part of the lake near us. Im sure the water patrol will be out there all weekend waiting to see if he surfaces.

Yeah, things can happen so quick. Be safe everyone.

Wow - two things are amazing about that: that he was still alive, and that they got there so fast. Hope he makes it, but you have to wonder how much he'll recover after that long without oxygen.

Unfortunately, 10 minutes is pretty much the max the brain can live without oxygen. Thats incredibly unfortunate, but by the sounds of it, there wasnt anything else you could do. ******** happens, and it sucks.

Well the guy died when he got to the hospital. I guess it was a son-in-law and a passer-by, a woman. I don't know who the little kid was on shore. The woman tried to go back to the scene for some reason and ended up getting arrested. She flipped out and tried kicking an officer. She was pretty desperate to get back the shore. She went from helping to try to save a man to being arrested for assaulting a Police officer.

What a crazy day.

thats sad, the water/river can be dangerous, just a few days ago some guy was boating at like 3 am, jumped out of his boat to impress his g/f, and now hes gone, and a month or so ago a group of kids were boating, and went over a dam near here, and a girl died, along with a whole bunch of other dam/boating accidents around here on the susquehanna and such.
