Bilge pump switch/concept for surf

ok, I just came up w/ a new concept for bilge operation in the surf...

my setup
I run a single 2.5" scupper valve and a single Mayfair bilge pump (500gpm)

My idea is this:
I went to a Marine surplus store and bought a lanyard switch that is a "normally closed circut", meaning w/ the lanyard pulled it's "closed" and w/ the lanyard engaged it's "open". I don't like to have the bilge running all the time since, you don't need it and it robs power (i think)... Anyway, I personally don't like it running unless it needs to be... The idea is if I'm riding along doing tricks and surfriding, I don't need the bilge, right??? So I wired up the switch and mounted it to the front of my tray and attached the lanyard to my lower vest. W/ the lanyard to the bilge switch, the pump will only turn on when I'm seperated fron the ski, the only time it needs to be on IMO... Everytime I sink or hydrolock my motor, it's because I didn't have the bilge on and it took on water up side down...

btw - the switch was $12 and looks to be decent quality (waterproof, of course)

disclaimer:
This is just a different way to do things... I realize most of you will just turn it on and off, but I thought I would share my idea...

I like the idea, If the pump is mounted to the bottom of the ski how is it able to pump out the water if the ski is up side down?

That seems like a good really good idea although I can't imagine a bilge robbing power.

Plus I am ashamed to say I still throw the occasional fountain and I need my 1100GPH kicking for that.:frown:

this in no way makes any sense for flat water use...

It would be cool to have a time delay on it, so it keeps running for another 30 seconds or whatever.

What I'm thinking of is you get separated, it rolls over, takes on water, you get to it, and are in the break zone, so you immediately plug in and start up to get out of that area, so the bilge stays full.

And as soon as I reread that, remembered you have a scupper, so you'd be fine.

Nevermind.

For your purposes, it sounds great really.

So do you mount your bilge on the underside of the hood for this mod? If the ski is floating belly up and the bilge is in its normal location it will be out of the water and pumping air or am I missing something?

O I see I think you need to flip your ski over in the other direction to keep the water from pouring in the carbs. LOL Or mount your pump on the hood liner.

It seems a little over kill to me. Its just more thing to fumble with, one more lanyard to forget/misplace/lose, and is just another device on the ski that will and most likely fail eventually do to the salt water conditions. I'll run my pumps all the time thank you.

That was not meant to be harsh... just voicing my opinion.

I like the idea. Could mount a second one upside down on the fuel tank I suppose.

ya know, that really would make this mod, if you could mount a pump upside down above the E-box or something like that, or on the tank... I end up flipping my ski and sinking it at least once a month and this may actually prevent that... I will do some testing and see what works....

I aslo could see a bracket that mounts to a head bolt, that would hold the pump right at about even w/ the liner... this would be so simple to do too... make the pump removable too...

Any thoughts on this???

not a bad idea....have to be stable so that it woudnt break loose with pancaked landings

Here's another approach: How about a mercury switch? Ski upside down = pump on. It would have to be a long one so it wouldn't turn the pump on and off as it gets bounced around in the chop. Those things are cheap too.
