Surf Safety gear.

We instituted new gear and ideas at Long Beach last weekend with good success. The new stuff: Flags, air horn, megaphone, first aid kit, riders safety meeting, tow loops, tow ropes, safety handout.

We had a fair amount of newbies, and wanted to break in everyone in a safe manor. Visibility was poor, and conditions were nasty on Saturday. Sunday was nice and sunny, and we ended up putting the stuff to the full test. Someone was out near the big break and hit bottom coming off a wave, sunk his ski and was getting hammered by 12' waves. It took perhaps 20-30 minutes before getting him and his ski back to shore, a few tense moments.

What are the flags for?

Everyone in my group has to have a tow loop up front and a tow strap when they ride with us. Other wise your on your own. Well of course we're not gonna leave some one stranded, but you get the picture

The airhorn was great.

Also, I am now a very firm believer in helmets. I had my ski tossed at my head from 10ft away by one of them breakers. It hurt with a helmet (it's got paint marks on it).
I think it would have been disabling without a helmet.

Most folks I saw had towloops and about 12ft of rope.

I liked the flags a lot especially on Sun once we moved them closer to the surf, they were very easy to see and were a good communication tool I thought. It's amazing how deafening things are when you are out in the surf with a helmet on.

They were easy for YOU to see because you were standing right next to them most of the time. :fingersx:

Thanks Idok, its to simple not to do it.

I agree........winter before last we lost butti for 30 minutes+.....found his boat RUNNING on shore with smoke billowing out the pissers

that was some scary chit, found him afloat about 100 yards from shore...thank god it was mild surf that day

john is a tuff MOFO......but that day put the fear in all of us (BTW the boat survived and is still running to this day! :arms: )

I keep meaning to buy some waterproof flares to duct tape to the boats/vest....but I always forget when IM at the boat store

Speaking of Surf safety what do you think about wearing a life jacket when riding? How about helping everyone else unload their boats before you go off and ride???:sneaky: :sneaky: At least this time you took the coat hangers out before you launched. . .
