Other Great Lakes Vacation Location

So I was wanting to rent a beach house somewhere on the East coast this summer and go surf riding for the first time but my (:):):):):)) riding buddy refuses to take his ski in salt water. That pretty much limits me to the Great Lakes. I really want a house right on or near a beach we can launch from and definitely in a location that will give us a good chance of decent waves. I was thinking maybe on an island like Kelly’s. We would probably have 6-8 people and am planning on sometime in August.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Are you planning on leaving skis on the island? I ask because it is a pain in the arse to get them out to the island. (Not really that bad but not worth it at all IMO)

That is at the shallow end of the lake and anyone who knows Lake Erie will tell you that is not the place to find Lake Erie waves. You have to be in Cleveland or East of Cleveland....

The NY crew has a KILLER spot (PM Frosty about his cottage) with a beach and KILLER bar and KILLER freeride every year. They get more waves than we do because the general winds over the lake are West. Here in Cleveland we need North winds. We get enough to keep us smiling though! Waves can range between fun 3 to 4' up to 6's and 8's and even 12'+ several times per year!

The Michigan crew has a killer spot too...but I don't know anything about cottages up that way...

You are NEVER EVER guaranteed waves on the great lakes and you can not plan a trip around them...no friggin way! No way no how not happening!

You should join the Cleveland crews FB page (Korn created to quickly communicate wave predictions to all riders so we all know when to go!) and just drive up on big wave days. We have guys from Columbus drive up and you are even closer.

We have been getting decent waves all Summer the last few years....I mean like a lot of 4' days....and those are plenty of fun! You are right though.....the big biggies tend to show up in September and beyond...

I'm used to riding flatwater so good 4'ers are usually plenty for me. I know how fickle Erie waves are so I figured getting a place on an island would be ideal since it wouldn't matter too much which way the wind is blowing... assuming there is wind. Michigan would work too and New York wouldn't be out of the question.

Yea Lake Erie 4's are very fun! Nice big rolls and UNLIMITED slashing and shredding because they are close together and come in all damn day when they come in!

6's are awesome and still charge me up after all these years! Anything bigger is a real eye opener to what the lakes can dish out!

4 footers are a blast! Hell I'll take 3 footers. It's so unpredictable when they come. You can have flatwater and 5 footers in the same day. I've watched the lake turn from glass to insanity in the course of an hour many times.

Join the facebook page matt mentioned and meet up when they get big. If it calls for 6 footers add 4 feet to that for the ride to the beach.

No reason to buy a house dude. We usually predict good waves 2-3 days out so just plan ahead and drive the 2 hours up to ride with us on Erie.

Lake Huron is similar in wave action. We ride at the tip of the thumb and there is no telling which weekend will be good for waves (4's, 6's and bigger) but they are a blast. Our riding spot is pretty nice because you can pick up nice waves from the West and North.

I will definitely be going to Daytona next year! This year I'm stuck in the middle of a ski build...

It sounds like I might just plan on renting a place and going to the TXJ ride, it would be right around the time we were planning on. Any good rentals around there?

A lot of people tent camp but Drew (NY crew) turned us a on to a full blown house with a giant yard and driveway last year....I don't know if anyone took it or not...but if you find out about it from him you might want to book it well ahead of time...

I like a clean 3' over a choppy 4 or 5' any day of the week. But when you say it like that, it sounds so cool. I love UNLIMITED slashing and shredding.
