Rebuilding my factory Yamaha 701 starter motor. The stock O-ring is pretty loose. I usually use grease on them but I was thinking of using silicone.
Has anyone used a thicker aftermarket O-ring? I don't want water to get in, but the stock rubber rings are pretty weak. Yamaha wan't $14 each for those!

they sure do.

honestly, hit the snout of the starter with a cleaner/solvent then apply a semi-thick-ish layer of 1211 onto it and youll be good.

... however, id like tp get a handful of these o-rings myself.....

grease washes away, and the seal breached eventually. 1211 stays sealed. silicone is okay, but comes unadhered under 'chemically' conditions.

I use the super thick dow 111 grease. It doesn't just wash away. I have it caked on multiple things in my engine compartment, and anything short of direct water hose spray doesn't wash it off. Even that just sort of moves it around. It is actually made to be a water valve sealant/ lubricant. A good buddy told me about it ;)

1211 is awesome, but I don't want to have to scrape out the hole or have to fight the starter out. Honestly, had I thought about it, I may have 1211'd it, but this grease is fine. I have never had water in the flywheel cover problems. I made the mistake of soaking the bendix in ATF once... that will never happen again. Talk about a nasty flywheel cover area...
