Yamaha Start/Stop Switch Issues

Rancid

So I'm having an issue with my 1994 WB1. It will run great for awhile and then suddenly stop. If I try to turn it back on, it will just turn and turn and never spark up. It mostly happens after I've been riding hard and really getting the ski wet.

If I immediately put it on the dock and disconnect the black and white connector inside the hull, the ski will start right up perfectly. After the ski sits for a while and dries out, it will start up perfectly fine.

I'm assuming the problem is that moisture is entering the start/stop switch assembly and shorting the button that the lanyard attaches to. I bought an older switch and rebuilt the one on my ski with the nicer internals. Then, I sealed the edge with clear silicone. But I still had the problem this weekend.

Whenever I open the hood up, the connectors are wet. Could the issue be the wet connectors and not the switch? Would wrapping them in electrical tape to help keep them dry help? Should I just buy a new/rebuilt start stop switch? Thanks for any help...

Try filling the connectors up with dielectric grease before you push them back together. Same goes for the on/off buttons. I have found that all silicone and black tape does is to trap the moisture in.
