Other Yamaha Problem. Help!

Alright i no that most people on here dont like sit downs but i have a problem. I have a 1996 yamaha waveraider 1100. It has about 70 hours on it so it actualy runs good and everything......when it will turn over. Half the time when i go to start it nothing happenes. Then i wait a little and it will work. I cant take it out anymore because it is so unreliable. I cant figure out what the problem is. if it was the solenoid wouldnt i hear a click. And if it was the ground wire the solenoid would buzz right? Any help would be great thanks.

Will it always crank, just not fire? Or when you hit start does nothing at all happen (no crank)?

Do you wiggle the switch? My first guess is usually the start/stop switch. You can find the plug in the wires under the hood somewhere. There will be two different plugs that run up to your switch on the bars. One is for you kill and one is for the start. If you cross the two wires over on the start side and it turns over you probably found your problem.

Sounds elementary, but doublecheck your connection at the battery. I have had the same problem, and that was the culprit.

Sounds like it could be a bad start stop switch. Jumper the brown and red wires together just outside the electrical box and see if that gets it to turn over.

Thanks for the ideas. When i hit start it doesnt crank or do anything. It only happenes about 50% of the time so next time it happenes i will try jumping the wires. I no that the connectors are not switched and i have lubbed them both. The batterey terminals look good. It might be a while before I can take another look but I will let everyone know when i do. Thanks again for your help.

Make sure your battery cables aren't toast. They tend to fall apart inside the isolation, especially if the ski is a salt ski. Just pinch the cables, they should still be soft, not hard like a pipe.
