the hood separating does not surprise me, everything else is defiantly unexpected.

on the hood liner whats the best way to fix it so it does not happen again? or is it a design flaw that will need attention every once in a while?
glue, glass both?

yeah,
if i had foot straps I would have stayed with the ski, its kinda hard to keep the ski under/above Yuh without them, or at least it is for me.
really i have no idea how to ride surf! (first time) I can ride it and read the waves but i don't have enough time out there to find out what works best for me. I'm pretty sure straps are a must.

I really wasn't trying to go huge. with big waves its crazy how high you go.

I'm going to tear it down and grind the ribs off the bottom deck and re-enforcing it for surf.
and add some freakn foot straps!
i figure the additional 5-10lbs of reinforcement will not effect my flat water riding.
then there is the issue of tubbies those would be nice to have.
so maybe...... just maybe i will make it in to a surf boat.

Matt,
we rode at
15th street in Lincoln city ,OR.
Dont feel bad at all for what happened the first time out, I threw my back out first time at Longbeach in the first 30 minutes and still had wall to wall grin on my face.....Took me realisically a couple years to really get comfortable and able to read and ride waves, and been riding flat for years. Anyone who rides can go out and jump, etc and get the crap beat outta them, but the real surf pro's look like they are almost flowing with the water effortlessly. The longer I ride surf, the more I know I can learn....

yah, I got allot to learn about surf. Its a whole different world out there.I did learn Its no place to be complacent. I went out past the break in the rollers to "relax" a little. I felt so small like a freakn fishing bobber or something.

It did feel good to get out there. like I accomplished something. ill be honest i was apprehensive, lookin out there at the crashin waves.
I agree aerial tricks are allot different then actually riding the Waves.
ridding the waves was allot scarier then "jumping". my ski was on the Verge of nose diving it was all i could do to hang off the back to keep nose from gettn sucked under.
I forgot how salty the water is. I haven't got sea water in my mouth since I was a small boy boogie boarding at pismo.
all in all it was fun. other than the damage. but whatever it is what it is. I will fix it and try it again.

Yea good, we are 3 hrs from here to Greyland, 6 to Tierra. Probably only get down there around 6-8 times a year, and 1 or 2 of those to Tierra, I envy the brothers in Cali. that hit either Pismo or Oceanside 2-3 times a week.....even once a week would be nice.

bout time weston! Now you have officially become a man! There is nothin in the world like riden a wave twice as big as you (12'+)and those huge floater rolls that give you butterflys in the gut. Congrats bro! I'll be up that way real soon and maybe I'll bring my ski...

i cant wait to try mine in the surf , its a 2.5 hour drive for us in Jakarta to get the waves but as soon as i get back from Spain we are going down for the weekend .

shame your ski got busted up but its just a ski rebuild it and bust it up again its all part of the fun :-}}}

Sorry about your ski brotha but on the other hand welcome to the real addiction! There’s a reason why we needed a separate surf/freeride section from the flatwater freestyle section. A Surf Ski set up is as different from a flat water set up as a couch is to a stand up. They’re completely opposite set ups. In the surf weight isn’t an issue and a heavy ski is your friend. Surf Ski reinforcement means ¼” thick with some areas up to 1/2” thick. Yes I said ¼” to ½”thick, especially if you’re going to be riding huge Oregon surf

this ski was never built for the surf!
I built it to learn flat water rolls, It has served its purpose well for that.

The worst part is I new better.

I don't know if the surf thing will become a regular event. I have a compitition level flat water ski and need to focus my time and energy on.
(learning flat water B flips and combos)
Unfotunatly my flat water ski is not ready to practice on, and needs a few hours of tuning by the builder.

i know, i wasnt putting your build down.

well once you get your flatwater ski ready, you should make your rn into a surf ski!!

sjetrider

615 Freeriders are addicted to T1 madness.
I cannot even imagine riding in surf the first time in the type surf you all have there. The 4 footers wooped my azz the first time I rode surf (like 12 or more years ago).
The surf you all get would have my azz so tight you could not drive a nail in it even now LOL.
But I wanna try it regardless WOOT!!!.

infamy,
No worries bro!
I'm kinda leaning toward dedicating the RN to surf.....

brian,
Im not going to say I wasn't aprehinsive about going out there.

I just tore the motor out to start fixing and basically making a surf bout out of this thing. found a little more damage thought i should share. the chamber hit the side hard enough to make it oblong.
would stiffer motor mounts keep this from happening?
i understand the pipe will allways rub. but after i reinforce it down past the bond line the hull will be thicker causing the pipe to rub worse. and possibly smashing my pipe even worse.
I'm going to start a build thread soon hopefully i can get some good advise.
as Ive never built a surf ski.

atta boy weston. You finally saw the light! I put a strip of turfjust below the bond line to keep the chamber from rubbing or banging against the side of the hull. It actually made it sit pretty tight so I don't think it could bang. I'm not a big fan of those stiff mounts. Mounts are easier than inserts to swap...

thanks for the info
is it commen to pull inserts out with stiff mounts?
when i reinfoce. it will be thicker around the pipe area and me fear is i will bang the chamber up again i know aluminum work hardens pretty bad and i doubt i can kepp fixing the chamber before it rips or cracks.
i figured the mounts would keep the motor from moving around on hard landings.
but i dont want to rip inserts out. so.......
i started a build thread maybe you could check it out and give me some advise/answer to some of the questions i have.
