ya.....lets go ride some surf

So I met this cat in havasu that lives in Lincoln city ,OR he mainly rides surf. Which i have never ridden surf mainly because i know what happens when you throw down on nice ski's in the surf. After Stanton, Chris, and other trying to get me to ride surf. against my better judgment I figured I should see what all th fuss is about. and just see if i could do it! I knew I would eventually destroy my ski if I took in the surf.... but the first time really!

my carbon ride plate looks like wadded up news paper ( re-entry to shallow) i can live with that.

I B roll clockwise my rear foot coming out of the tray (no straps) and WHAMMO ! the following is damaged on the left side originally i say the hood seal was blown out i though no big deal just re glue it then i found.
hood liner is cracked
hood liner is completely separated from hood shell (on one side)
hull is cracked all the way through the reinforcement at the hood lip
one of my pipe coupler clamps broke
my bilge pump switch is now ruined due to salt water intrusion

good times my a$$ sure its fun but at what cost. I guess I could just carve the surf but I'm just not the take it easy type.

It's bitter sweet cuz I'm stocked I can throw down in the Oregon coast winter surf, but I'm not real happy about the carnage.

allways never roll in the surf without foot straps.
if i had them i guess i could have avoided this, a ffh and foot holds are NOT enough to go big.

To be honest I would have rather the Rok get damaged as it's not painted.
I put alot of work in that hull check my build thread!

awesome...now you know what you have to do to make your next ski surf ready. if the ski was built right for surf you wouldnt be having those issues.

this ski was never built for the surf!
I built it to learn flat water rolls, It has served its purpose well for that.

The worst part is I new better.

I don't know if the surf thing will become a regular event. I have a compitition level flat water ski and need to focus my time and energy on.
(learning flat water B flips and combos)
Unfotunatly my flat water ski is not ready to practice on, and needs a few hours of tuning by the builder.

Most those hoods will do the same thing at some point, just got done glueing mine back together as well.....Just patch it back up, add a bit of reinforcment and get back out there. Once you learn to move with it and not just throw something huge your equiptment will be happier.

the hood separating does not surprise me, everything else is defiantly unexpected.

on the hood liner whats the best way to fix it so it does not happen again? or is it a design flaw that will need attention every once in a while?
glue, glass both?

yeah,
if i had foot straps I would have stayed with the ski, its kinda hard to keep the ski under/above Yuh without them, or at least it is for me.
really i have no idea how to ride surf! (first time) I can ride it and read the waves but i don't have enough time out there to find out what works best for me. I'm pretty sure straps are a must.

I really wasn't trying to go huge. with big waves its crazy how high you go.

I'm going to tear it down and grind the ribs off the bottom deck and re-enforcing it for surf.
and add some freakn foot straps!
i figure the additional 5-10lbs of reinforcement will not effect my flat water riding.
then there is the issue of tubbies those would be nice to have.
so maybe...... just maybe i will make it in to a surf boat.

I think I've ridden there and disliked it tremendously. Rocks everywhere.
Next time, consider going another 3 miles north to the Salmon River estuary. Much nicer place, cleaner surf.

we where originally going to ride out at salmon river but the tide was not cooperating.
the rocks are pretty gnarly but if you put in 100 yard down from there its not bad i guess?
IDK, I don't have anything to compare it to. the break was good. there is a spot that is like a giant washing machine, the back set was nice. well maybe nice isn't the word I'm looking for.

I just didn't care for having to push the ski that far from the parking area to somewhere ridable.
Of all the places I've tried in Washington and Oregon, that one was my least favorite by far.

Matt you sound like a surf snob......JK

the push is less than ideal its proly the smallest beach access area Ive ever seen. But i didn't really have an option the people and places i can ride surf with are limited.
It would be nice if there was a group of surf rider that where closer.

I'm just too lazy to put up with the inconveniences of that place.
There are regular riders just 30 miles further north at the Tierra Del Mar beach access. (same as Surf Slam)

lincoln city is a 3 hour drive from my house one way,
who rides at tierra?

You definatley need a surf boat in the surf and you will still find it's weak spot's.

Agreed
lesson learned.
