Great day of riding. Very bad ending. Now I gotta get an interim motor while I maybe rebuild this... oh and I have a new motor coming in 4 months too. FML.

no signs of detonation, water ingestion, etc. I think the rod just let go. Interesting that this has polished rods. Wonder if that contributed. Note the hairline crack in the sleeve. Otherwise top end is fine. Oh and the starter hit the manifold and cracked it (at least I can weld that)

Was that a True & Welded Crankshaft? Any way to check that it's still 180 degrees in phase?

What about the Bolt Re-Torque Schedule? Have the Cylinder Base Nuts or Girdle Bolts/Studs been checked/torqued on a Regular Basis? Maybe some of the Crankcase Bolts loosened?

The Rods were Polished, were they shot peened afterwards? Maybe the Rod had an internal Casting Flaw? Or are they Forged Conecting Rods?
I can’t answer most of those questions since I bought the ski/motor used. Visually it looks to be in phase. Never retorqued the base bolts but they were very tight. Crankcase bolts are sll there and tight. Dunno about the rods but they are high gloss almost chrome looking. I believe this is how all the XS cranks are these days.

Just got the rod unstuck on both ends. The bearings feel perfect on both ends. I don’t see any explanation other then the rod just failed. I’m actually surprised how good the bearings feel.
