i am running an xmetal pole for next season and was wondering how i could get my stock turn plate to run with the pole

does it work
i know one of the bushings does not fit in the hole in the pole
im just wondering how some of you guys have rigged it up

i may have to buy the umi kit??

All of the X-metal poles that I have seen recently require that the steering post hole be enlarged to 1" they measure about 7/8ths, prolly due to the powder coating. I just bought a cheap 1" bi metal hole saw and it cut like butter. You might consider this option instead of the UMI if you want to run an aftermarket steering plate. It uses the stock delrin bushings with the shoulders cut off to make them into washers. It requires a Kawi 750 or 800 steering pin, washer, castle nut, & cotter pin. This can be easily removed from the Kawi steering plate with a little heat. The steering plate bolts in like a UMI and you just thread in the Kawi pin. The steering plate is called a Doo Speed and is in the Hot Products Catalog. Check it out in the pic below. Myself and a couple of friends are running this setup with good luck so far. It is low maintenance because it is all stainless and eliminates all of the rusty bearings. I do not know if you would be able to run the stock Yamaha plate as it is cast around the Yamaha steering pin. Just buy the X-Metal shortened steering plate & bars and it will improve your riding position by 1.5 "

You have a $500 pole and won't spend $150 on a UMI set up?

I put a used UMI setup on my ski and made my own tuff thrust bearing replacement out of old stock handle pole bushings. On the other ski I put that Doo Speed plate with the Kawi setup. The Kawi steering pin is much stronger than the UMI as the threaded portion is the same size as the shaft. You can get it very close to zero slop if you adjust the thickness of the delrin bushings so that cotter pin goes in a just the right tighness of the castle nut. Check it out it Daytona on Moondance's SN or sjetrider's Rev. Sounds ghetto but it works and is low maint.

get a waterdawg steering setup instread, or go UMI with a JSS "tuff thrust" bearing kit and it'll last forever!

The best you can do with UMI is to get the JSS tuff thrust and stainless bearing, but then the o-rings still give and you've ultimately spent about $200.00, not $150.00 and its still not right.

I must be lucky then, my UMI stays tight. Crap out in a year? I'm goin on 6 years now.
On good advice, I heavily greased my berrings and did not have an issue. I spent $1 at a hardware store for some nylon washers and made my own Tuff Thrust kit just cuz.
I haven't cracked open my UMI in probably 3 years.

Sorry Superslug, I just thought it was funny.

cool idea....I have thought about that before, but never sat down with the parts in front of me to see if it woudl work..

it is a bit pricey...at leaset the JSS kit gives you a couple of extra O-rings (mine did at least)

Waterdawg's setup looks to be a nice complete solution. Airtime also has one that I like as it uses bushings (like OEM) and mounts flat to fit any handlepole, but with the Pound/Dollar exchange rate it is quite expensive. I have repeatedly bugged Pat about making a simple bushing spindle to work with his (and other) turnplates, but he's apparently too busy making cool pump stuff.

Yea yea yea, the prototype is on pancakes Boat.
I have a couple adjustments to make, and if it works out we'll have it at Daytona.
It is a bushing system that should never wear out, no O'rings, or bearings, its real light, and installs in like 30 seconds...no joke.

Pat gave me his steering set up at Lanier a couple years ago. It seems to be holding up good. I've bent my 24/7 bars on a 24/7 steering that I'm using on my Octane.
