It will get progressively worse.

Yea you can use that if the machine will let you and if you have under 3.75BG of data to back up. Its always best to convert them over and not try to mess with anything using the infected operating system.....at least when time is money anyway.

You will get a lot more use out of that converter (maybe) over the years IMO.

You don't transfer your files, you hook your hard drive up to the usb adapter, then plug it into a good computer to scan it.

Ok, I got you.

So when you scan it and find the files the antivirus program will do its thing and then your ok.

Then take care of the infected files on the old laptop by blasting it................

That is a tough one to get rid of. You may actually have to try all of those programs Madmat listed. I've had the best luck with Malware Bytes for that particular type of infection.

I have had reasonable success with system restore... enough for me to try it (takes 5 minutes). Some of the nastier stuff disables it though.

For someone (BK) that does not have an external hard disc adapter. I would certainly try it.

System Restore resolved several infections of the "Personal Anti-virus" BS pop-up virus
Try it first, may not work, but it is an easy place to start!

Yea those are a biatch to get rid of...fake or replica "software". Remove the drive and convert it to USB and plug it in to another machine and back up your important files and then blast it will everything.....Your anti-virus program, malware bytes, spybot S&D, and then boot to it and run panda root kit detector. And then install and spybot S&D and immunize the system. Then install and run CCleaner.

That usually works but not always.
If it has an "autorun" virus this can mess up the PC you hook it to. Even using the USB stick to get files off can cause the clean PC where you move the files to be infected.

This is not stuff an amateur should be doing. You can cause a lot more pain. I count Geek Squad, etc as amateurs.

AVG is a good free antivirus, I'd remove McAfee and install AVG myself.

What he said... I just did it to our nanny's laptop the other day (Windows 7).

Running Norton Corporate on all our other machines (XP).

Or, and stay away from sketchy sites like X-H2O, etc... :pancake:
