Why do people shorten handle poles, when you can use straight 7/8 OD stock tubing and lose 1-2" versus 0 degree bars?

With the shorter pole you are moving the center of gravity more forward changing your riding position on the ski. It is a more aggressive riding position, Depending on your height and build determines how short you need to go. This is not just a freestyle only mod, it can work for race ski's as well.

The thing that is confusing to me is that people will go through all kinds of work shortening the handlepole when the turn-plate could be modified.

Case and point: I was reading around and found somebody who shortened his pole by 4 inches, only to end up saying it was too short. If he had either run straight bars or shortened his turnplate, he could have landed his ideal -2" and saved a lot of time and work.

Just a thought

they shorten the pole as well as the turnplate

Ok, but if you can go -4 by shortening your turnplate and running 7/8 od stock, how much shorter can you really go?

On my 96 sxi, I didn't even shorten the turnplate and probably am -3 over stock... if I re-drill I could lose another inch.

also having the pole shorter keeps it from hitting you in the chest and knees

People shorten it because of preference. Easier to do certain things with different setups. When you start doing more tricks and modifying your ski you will understand.

There is only so much you can shorten just by using the turn plate and bars. It is also a leverage thing. Just because you shorten the distance with the turn plate, it is not the same as a shorter pole.

Shortening the pole brings you closer to the ski...actually it makes the ski feel smaller...it is easier to throw around also due to a shortened turning radius not to mention gives you an aggressive stance.

Personally I have ridden a few skis with straight bars , absolutely hated every one of them, its all in what you get used to riding I guess.

x2 to that, I havent been riding as long as the majority of those answering but new something was up after awhile, I went with -2 and the shorter plate and it made a huge difference, first it was scary and thought I had made a huge mistake but gave it a couple rides and now I love it, 0 degree and straight I like em both now, took awhile to get over the feeling of the gonna loose my teeth.

After doing this and probably -2 to 3 inches over stock, just wondering if folks who are going with 0 degree bars and -2 pole could save some coin. Here's my $26 setup. I did not shorten my turnplate, and could easily lose another inch by re-drilling.

It's all about how you ride, and how you want your ski to feel. There are guys on here with -12 poles on their shortened hulls.

once you bring the point where the bars mount too far forward you will run into problems where you have to clearance the chinpad to let the bars go to full turn
