Why are used jet ski prices severly over priced?

in my local area on craigslist.com I am browsing through used jet ski's in the boat section, and about 90% of the people are pricing their jet ski's 1000's over kelly blue book value (this is a kelly blue book value of dealer pricing *including dealer advertising, mark up, warranty, reconditioning*

I see these jet ski's for sale...and I look up the dealer value for it on KBB, and I am amazed.

Now of course people arn't successfully selling these ski's usually ethier, but why even list them at such a high price..I noticed in the used car world this is not the case, atleast not as bad as jet ski's..

are people just trying to pay their loan off?

some peple got a couple thousand in aftermarked stuff invested in their skis. And some people are just idiots... And prices always start to rise in the spring then peak in the summer. Then drop in the winter

KBB values are often severely below the going rate for certain skis.
Just look up prices for used Superjets on KBB and then compare it to what they actually go for.
Just my opinion, but blue book is often not a good indicator for what pricing should be.

I dunno...people are just crazy...i msg'd a guy about a 98 xl760 for my parents...dude wanted 4200 for it...i told him i'd look at it for 2500 and he pretty much told me i was an idiot.

Alot of people actually buy jet skis on a CC and even at a high finance rate around 15%. Alot of this is impulse buying. The prices the sellers are asking is right at what they owe and prolly dont realize they are upside down on their notes.

KBB doesnt take in account SUPPLY and DEMAND. Its average. You can buy Skis cheaper in some areas than others. Your Area may warrant highr prices.

parts are the same way. Take a B-pipe or a Full Spec. carb. Most parts used sell for half new pricing but these particular parts sell for up to 80% of new pricing at times. Just nuts but its like CRACK we gotta have em.

Niche skis all bets are off but most should be around what KBB rec'ds. example of nich would be our superjets, Jeep Wranglers, etc..

IMO I value everday items at the mean of Dealer/Retail or Private Party and trade-in with a sliding scale for "wanted" add-ons.

NADA is way too high but most sellers use it as think they should get more than it's really worth. But can't really blame them. If someone's asking too much then I don't even bother responding to the ad, as I know they'll think my offer would be a straight insult. Let some other idiot over pay or the seller will realize this when no real offers come through.

. . .and "price listed" doesn't mean anyone is buying at that price.
It's like all the 100 mph jet boats listed on Craigslist, maybe 1% of those making the claim actually get close to triple digits.

KBB and NADA are all just bullsh$t. The basically apply a percentage depreciation each year to the original list price. It has almost nothing to do with condition, supply or demand.

NADA is supposedly fed by what dealerships pay for or sell used cars for, but the same dealerships look at NADA to decide what to price the cars at...it's stupid circular logic.

Around here the real price goes like this (in the summer):

Squarenose SJ for <$1000 is a deal.
Squarenose SJ over $1800 will never sell regardless of mods or condition

Roundnose SJ pre 2004 <$3000 is a deal
Roundnose SJ pre 2004 >$3600 will (almost) never sell regardless of mods.

Post 2005 around here is so rare it's hard to guess.

I don't follow couches or Kawasakis (except for smokin' deals on 650-750SX's).

Oh yeah, condition is everything. ATS_Scott and I used to have a pair of Polaris SLTX's (wife's skis). We listed them for $1000+ each over NADA value and sold them (at separate times) withing a couple DAYS to the FIRST person who looked at them.

Here are some marketing rules for buying/selling that NADA/KBB don't take into account at all:

You can sell a matched pair for 20%+ more than individually.

One 3 seater will sell faster and for more than one 2 seater couch. Reason - no one likes to ride alone

I'm moved by DASA power!
I have a Jeep Wrangler that I can sell for more than I bought it for 11 years ago, with very little money that I put into it, And your ski is truely only worth what someone is willing to give you for it, many people will over estimate its worth in advertisement figuring someone will come and try to barter them down.
