Who re-splines driveshafts??

I got an email from an engineer at Moser. They're willing to help. It costs $110 to respline and includes a 2 day turn around. They can do the male and female splines. Now we just need a schematic of the splines. Does anyone have a good one they'd like to take measurments from?

thats a great deal.does that include reheat treating also?

moser is most def a name you can trust when it comes to this kind of job:wink:

was it 110$ for the front shaft too?

My only problem with them is that they are used to dealing with parts that are constantly in a bath of oil. They normally use there own propiatary steel alloy that WILL rust. I mentioned to him that it needed to be made of stainless steel so that it wouldn't rust. He said they should be able to work that out. I'll ask about tempering the spline.

I'm making a drawing of the part for him now. My splines are trashed. I need to know if they are straight cut (they apear to be) and approximatly how much of a chamfer on the end of the shaft.

Anyone else have something to add? I'm sending him another email tomorrow.

just got this from jeff at WD customz

We can respline the male end of your drive shaft using a new hardened
piece that is twice as strong as the original. The rockwell hardness on a
stock shaft is around 30D, and ours is heat treated to be around 60D. The
cost is $100 plus shipping. Turn around time is about a week. Thanks.

if you are going to do that
then make sure you use a new short shaft
as you will find the worn shortshaft will wear the long shaft straight away and you will always be replacing one
Give it a go i hope i hope you have better experience than we did at resplining shafts

I cant stress enough if you do respline then dont put them in on an old short shaft

agreed.....:drillsergeant: both shafts MUST be replaced/rebuilt at the same time.this cannot be stressed enough

:thinking: i dont thik the shaft holding tool is built with the same degree of acuracy as the driveshafts themselves

your right i wouldnt use that to do it
its like a worn short shaft already

when we did this we found the weilding process weakened the area around the wield
and it broke in time there

Just like to point out this is not a correct statement as it stands... Hardness does not equal strength. And I hope the other end is going to the same hardness or that will just be the one wearing away. Also this would make the shaft more brittle unless he just is doing surface heat treating and leaving the core soft.


As to the welding weakening the shaft. You have a heat effected zone right on the edge of the weld that causes that. You should be able to heat treat the part to eliminate in. Definitely can lower your corosion resistance though as mentioned too.

The company that does them for jeff, did my custom shaft for my xjet. It's titanium and it looks like the spline piece is pressed on somehow. I'd bet they lathe down a damaged one and install the same piece. My shaft is titanium and the spline end is some kind of hardened steel because the titanium splines wear too fast.

now that would be the way to do it...
just sleeve the end of it....
