I dug this beauty out yesterday , it's been in the family ever since I can remember , at some point it will get a full restore and repaint but for now I am going with the survivor look, so I knocked off the loose rust and gave it a few coats of clear lacquer to seal and protect it till a later date .

It is a $250 fine if you operate an engine driven vessel (e.g., a jet ski) without a California Boater I.D. Card.

And I saw two State Parks rangers wearing smokey the bear campaign hats with two beautiful brand new white SUV's with big law enforcement stars on the doors writing a guy a ticket last Friday.

Unless you are renting. Then you dont need one.
Yes, that is crazy.

An unlicensed parent could rent a 70mph sit down jet ski and lend it to his 8 yr. old kid and neither would have been required to have taken and passed the Boater I.D. Card regardless of whether or not they have ever driven any motorized vessel including a jet ski before.

Welcome to California where Gavin Newsom didn't have to close his winery business or wear masks.

Dirtballs.

It's not just California , I don't know about jet skis here but I do know they rent Pontoon boats out on the Alabama river in Montgomery with just a drivers license and a credit card , I hear the ad on the radio every day .

Same here. Any idiot with a credit card can rent a jetski. Most often they haul ass through no wake zones and way too close to beaches where kids are playing. Every now and then I'll see someone totally wasted flying towards the shore completely unable to judge just how close they are before they try to turn and it's too late and they go skipping up rocks and stop several feet past thee shoreline. Never once have I seen the DNR officers pay any attention to any of those idiots. But they come and harass me about my kids riding jetskis. My kids who are more responsible than 95% of the adults on the water because they learned at a young age any time they do something stupid they sit out the rest of the day and also the next day we go out.
For kids to ride you have to pay a bunch of money and have them take a class all the way until they're 18. That's right, my 16 year old can drive a car but not a jetski. But any dumbass adult can.
We deal with the same crap with snowmobiles in the winter.

Laws regarding going out and having fun on your toys in probably any state are all bullpoop and make no sense.

That isn't correct. You have to be 16 to operate a PWC or boat over 15HP. You have to be at least 12 and accompanied by someone over 18 on the vessel with you.

Yes, it is ridiculous you don't need the license if you are renting but the age limits still apply.
My 15 yo son and I got ours for only the $10 filing fee and took the free online course.
