if the starter doesent spin when hooked up its probably your celinoid, was the engine running before or did you just get the ski?

It started squealing when starting, then it got so it would rarely start. Its a $50 "eBay special" so it serves me right. : - )

I thought I might have it hooked up wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's how its hooked up when sitting in the hull.

Yeah JSS. John removed the fuse also which scares me when I'm screwing around with the electrical stuff.

I just realized that the motor itself isn't grounded. If I remember correctly the relay (solenoid?) in the ebox is grounded via the stator, so if the engine isn't grounded, the start switch will not be able to activate the relay. I hate to run out to the garage at 1 AM to test it but its better than wondering about it all night.............

Just went thru this on a GP800 engine and a starter I bought from a fellow member. I connected the ground to the top starter mount and it wouldn't work, after some troubleshooting I swapped it down to the bottom bolt where the paint was already removed and it worked perfect. Damn paint!

Shark is correct!!
You need to ground the engine to have a ground back to the electrical box via the stator plate ground wire.

Yeah I ran a jumper cable from the battery negative post to a bolt on the motor and it worked.

The starter is junk. After riding the freshly rebuilt ski 8 times, the new starter started making weird noises. After the 10th ride, it is now locked up tighter than a bull's arse with flies on it (like my father used to say).
