Whats the best way to hydroturf tray side caps on an sxr

I tried searching for the answer but I couldnt find anything, sorry if this has already been covered.

I recently picked up an 08 sxr and want to do a full turf job on it. Ive got all the info I need except how to do the caps on the side of the tray. Do most people remove the caps entirely and mold foam to go under the turf or just wrap the caps and go under the outside lip? Ive seen lots of pics but its hard to tell if the stock plastic caps are under the turf or if its molded foam.

Awesome site by the way! Boatloads of good info on whats probably going to be my next addiction!:hail:

most people buy aftermarket composite caps to replace the stock rubber ones. But alot of sxr owners just remove the caps and mold some foam and turf over it. For my sxr i just filled the bolt holes(indentations with foam ) to smooth it out and wrapped turf, turned out good.

Thanks, how do you find the caps for padding with only the hydroturf? Ive heard stories of broken bones from not padding the caps at all but I'm wondering if just turf is sufficient or if its worth it to carve some foam ones for added protection

i ran mine with just turf and had 0 problems, you can use foam if u want to make a nice curvy smooth base for the Turf..... but u will have to glass over the foam cause i dont thing turf will stick to foam . I just dint have the patience to do that on mine lol.

Glass up the little holes that the caps make.
Put some hydroturf padding down (just a thin strip)
Sand the padding to make smooth.
Turf.

Done for good.

I agree with djkorn. I did the composite rail caps and it was a waste of time and money. They look really good, but it really wasnt worth the hassle. I suggest just doing the turf over the rail cap area.

I did my entire SXR tray and footholds with 1 sheet of turf. I still have the stock caps on but there was enough extra to get it done. Not extra for mistakes though
