Clearly, a Kawasaki product is what you want for freestyle. Just ask Kx454

Screw superjets or Kawi's, the Seadoo 3d is the best of everything! Run the full seat on days you want to take your girl for a spin, slap the moto seat on for shredding buoys and switch over to the stand up position for some hard core freestyle

I wouldnt spend more than $1500 on a Squarenose. maybe $2000 if its just stupid clean, but thats just my area. Sales are higher and lower in different areas. if you get a kawasaki, well you can forget freestyle. if you search the forum for square nose builds, some of the guys make them look badass with some decent weights. But that would be down the road if you're just starting out. As long as it's a superjet, you're doing fine.

125 pounds!? A functioning stock 701 or 650 superjet will blow your wad off man! I'd find the best you can for 2k and use the rest for maintenance and general problems. l didn't factor that in to my original budget....

Shop around as far out as you will travel and find one as built up as you can. Test ride it first!

X2 what mthomps said. Gas and two-stroke oil is getting to be pretty expensive and aftermarket goodies are also high. I have spent more off aftermarket stuff then what i paid for my RN, pretty easy to do.

Buy the cleanest most reliable thing you can afford. If you have $3000, take the minty all stock RN over the beat up modified square nose. If you have $4500, buy a minty modified RN, but don't buy something rough just because it has parts on it. You are better off with a $3000 minty stocker and $1500 in your pocket for upgrades than a $4500 worn out piece of crap.

a SN has the same bottom deck so handling will be similar, but reliability due to age and build quality (such as the pole breaking, and needing conversion brackets to run newer poles) are an issue. If you can't afford a RN, buy a clean SN, but don't buy a RN just because it's a RN, buy it because it's cleaner.

I spent $800 on my 650sx and never rode. I put my X2 together with old worn out parts and it ripped, but rarely ran. I bought a 2004 all stock minty RN SJ for $2800, it was the least powerful of all 3 skis, but the damned thing runs like a top. I almost never pick up a wrench, and when I do, it's usually to tune or modify it more to my riding. I ride 2-3 times per week, and the only reason I didn't before is because my other skis were always broken. If there is one thing I wish I had done, it was spend that $3000 on my 1st ski (instead of the $800 to be cheap) and have something I could ride for years. I'm very happy with my RN, not because it's a RN, but because I can always go enjoy it.

Your 1st ski should be reliable, not powerful. There's no better advice than that.

I found a sn with a group k sleeper engine. i am going to check it out this weekend

Nice find! Ask to ride it before you buy it. If he won't meet you at the launch ramp don't offer his asking price.

Group k is known for ultra reliable motors. IMO a stock sn or sn modified by a professional builder is the way to go. Put gas and oil for the summer in to your budget. Keep a couple hundred aside for things like steering cables/motor mounts/starters. Things break no matter how old or new.

couldnt have said it better myself. my first ski (650sx) almost burnt me out on the sport because it had some new issue every time i took it out. Im not slamming 650's though. i sold that one and bought another 650 that runs like a champ every outing. the point though is make sure reliability is your first priority in the ski you buy. if its possible, ask the guy to meet you at the water. have some character though and pay for his entrance fee if applicable, buy him a case of beer, and only take the thing for a quick five minute ride. that way he wont feel taken advantage of or feel like you just wanted a joy ride if you do decide not to buy it.
