I ripped off an 8 inch by 8 inch chunk of paint last weekend doing subs. I need to get some paint. I would prefer something that I can get in a rattle can but I have a cheapo paint gun I can use if I have to.

Buy spare blue RN hood for under $100. You'll never make it look good with a rattle can.

How do you rip off paint doing subs? Especially 8 x 8"? Its not OEM paint I'm guessing...

had to go to the local auto store and try to color match it
i couldn't bring my ski into the shop form her to scan so she gave me every shade of blue and purple and white to experiment with
i got it close but it sucked and took a lot of time

color rite make a rattle can version i think

update

I got all the old paint of. Most of it peeled right off with the use of a heat gun. I bought new paint last night. I spent about a 100 bucks on everything but I am sure I will have some left over. The plan is to get it primered tonight. Color should be laid on friday and clear it on sat.

It'll last 10X longer than stock. Yami is clueless when it comes to painting techniques. I had a chip in my 04 hood paint and I could friggin blow the paint off with a garden hose. I had an autobody shop redo mine, and it is rock hard now.

Any automotive paint store should be able to color match that paint if you give them a sample.

I bought a quart of DuPont Nason urethane paint for 23 bucks in that color.

I finished the clear last night. The paint looks a little purple right now but I think it might be the uv type lights in the paint booth. I ended up with a few specs of lint/dirt and one run. I am not that worried about it though. It will be a good spot for an X sticker. I took a few phone pics I will get them uploaded.

Yes its OEM paint. It comes off because Yamaha never preps the SMC after it pops out of the mold. It still has the mold release and they just paint it to save time and money.
.
So after a few years(or less) it starts to peel and that is why it is so easy just to scrape it off with a razor blade. Its a very poor bond and YAM dont care because by the time it starts to peel, your warranty is usually expired.
If they would just scuff it before they paint, I bet it would hold up a long time. I did the hood on a Blaster 1 awhile back and razor bladed off the old red and prepped it and painted it black and it hasnt peeled or done anything funky(according to the guy i sold it too).

I used some crappy matrix paint. it was the cheapest stuff I could get. its held up pretty good this season. I wet sanded and then hi it with primer and then a little more wetsanding and then hit it with the paint and then a good chunk of clear. it turned out pretty good. I think I spent 100 bucks on the supplies. I still have enough left I could prob do another hood if needed.
