What kind of paint for cylinders?

Thinking about painting my cylinder while my motor is out.What kind of paint should I use? Can I use auto paint or do I have to use high temp? what about the head pipe? Anybody know were to get high temp paint in cool colors not just chevy orange and black etc.Is there any additive for auto paint to make it resist high temps?

Any body know of a place I site I can buy high temp paint? I already looked at duplicolors site. The problem is none of there distributers actually carry any of the cool colors all they have is black chevy orange etc. Cmon guys I need some info:feedback: . Im trying to paint my cylinders this weekend.

I bought my black engine paint from pepboys. Works great. And they carry a pretty decent array of colors.

how high temp would it need to be??? is 500 deg high enough?

have you looked at duplicolor metalcast??? it looks pretty cool. anodized look:bigeyes: good to 500 degrees f

i just got a can of the metalcast orange and ground coat. i'm not sure what i'm gonna try it on, but my parts store "donated" it to me:headbang: :headbang: :headbang: well, i had to buy the ground coat, but they gave me the orange

i use Tempo Engine Spray Paint that i buy at the marine store i work at... it works well. 8 bucks a can tho

Alright, Im giving the metalcast a shot. Not sure if its going to hold to head pipe but Ill keep you posted.

you have to spray a chrome finish underneath those metal cast finished dont you?

or have a polished surface to begine with?

How about just polish the cylinder and clear coatit?

Yeah they have an undercoating called ground coat you spray first. I just finished spraying head pipe. Turned out nice, we will see how it holds up.

I went to walmart as well. Your cylinders only should heat up between 150 & 180 that 500 degree paint should be fine

ya, i just used the orange on my exhaust flange, looks nice...we'll see how it holds up though, left my camera at home though so i'll post them on my build tomorrow

just sanded it back out.

I would reccommend removing the old paint first, down to the bare alum.

I painted my motor last year. I blasted all the old paint off first, painted it with a zinc chromate primer (adheres to alum very well) then sprayed the color coats after the primer had dried.
I do not remember what blaster material I used to remove the paint....it was NOT sand though. It was just course enough to remove corrosion and paint.
I did not have access to the blaster to remove the paint off the head of flywheel cover, so I scuffed them as well as possible with a 3m scuff pad. The paint has not held up as well on the head or flywheel cover. It chips off easier than on the part I removed all the old paint & used zinc chromate primer.
