If it's really bad, use 800 grit wet sand paper, then rubbing compound, then polishing compound. Sometimes it takes 2-3 tries after sanding, and it's work, but the result is excellent most of the time. The wet sanding, IMO, works great on badly faded skis, but no heavier grit paper than 800.
On older skis that I've picked up I've use my Porter Cable 7424 orbital polisher. Judging by how bad the paint is I will use either a cutting pad with a cutting or just start with a polishing pad to remove swirls and enhance the swirl, followed by a wax pad, with a good quality wax.
i use this meguires rv cleaner paste stuff thats gritty to clean it first (its REALLY old stuff idk what its called now) then i just use some regular car wax.
